I live in Gangseo. I was going to start volunteering at an orphanage through a friend, but it was about a 2 hour subway ride away from me. There has to be something I can do closer to this area. Do any of you volunteer anywhere closer to Gangseo? Any suggestions on where to find info on stuff like this?

Not to sound like a Killjoy but Volunteering is technically illegal for foreigners, because it constitutes as work. Tread lightly

I thought it was only if you get paid, because they didn't want foreigners taking jobs away from Koreans. How does volunteering hurt anyone?

This sounds like you have to pay 60,000 to get a volunteer gig added to your visa.

Want to volunteer? Call the immi hotline at 1345 and get personal permission.

This is the link they gave out over a year ago about volunteering and paying the fee:

Call first, take names, watch your ass. In Korea, helping people for free on your time could get you in trouble.

No good deed goes un-punished - especially in this country.

Remember that.

That's sad isnt it?

In the UK community service is a punishment for crooks who arent BAD enough to go to jail. They have to pick up litter and paint fences etc.

What? That's whack. I've done plenty of volunteer work thru Seoul Global Center. They have Business English clubs that they need advisors for, and once in a while they have big volunteer trips like the oil spill clean up this past spring. Google their website for more info. It's all the way in City Hall, but maybe you can find something or ask them for any opportunities. Good luck and kudos to you for wanting to help out.

Thank you. City Hall is a lot closer to me and easier to get to, than the orphanage. I'll look into it.
