The Arirang is Korea's intangible cultural asset #1. This weekend is a great time to experience some live performance and celebration that is big for Korea. I like to get out and film performances when I can. I'd loved to have had this nice little digital camera back in the 1990's when I was in Europe seeing it all, but there wasn't hand held technology like that. Jeongseon is a small town tucked away in the mountains of rural Gangwondo with a river running through it where about 6 foreigners live and many others visit on their weekend outings. You'd go to Wonju or Gangneung to get a bus to Jeongseon. The Koreans claim Jeongseon is where the Arirang song was written some 600 years ago.
They already started the party today even though it's supposed to start tomorrow and go through Sunday. It sounds really good with lots of percussion and traditional music. Too bad they didn't reserve this event in a special 4 day weekend as my students are performing tomorrow and Friday which no one will get to see as they're at work tomorrow and Friday, but the weekend is the real party. I'm kinda amiss that it's a 4 or 5 day event without a long weekend. It's really a great thing if you have the time to do it.
If you come, there's minbaks due to Jeongseon not having many hotels and motels and the fact that so many many people are coming.

Bump.
No one's going? Surely some adventurer is making his/her way out to Jeongseon, Gangwondo. Dont' worry, you don't have to meet me. I bet some of those travel clubs in Seoul are taking a bus trip out to the Arirang festival. The place is filling up with many tour buses and people. Pretty awesome.
It really is a cool concert with many elements as well as a fair. I'm not sure what all it will consist as an English schedule lacks and I didn't see anything detailed in Korean. I just got finished viewing it tonight and it's a really cool concert. I suspect it'll go later Friday and Saturday night. It's still going on, but finishing to wrap up. I didn't stay since I got cold due to not bringing my coat.
I bet those Adventure Korea minded folks are too busy to be on Daves ESL forums, but are out doing it instead of sitting on the PC typing about how good it can or should be.
I too am guilty of typing away when I should be busy focusing on living life to it's fullest.
UPDATE: I just viewed the most awesome fireworks display ever. It was incredible. Much more than any 4th of July I ever seen in America. Quite impressive. They take a lot of heart in their Arirang. |
