|
|
This year, for our 2 - 4 day camp in middle school (actual length has yet to be decided) our principal has requested that we incorporate the creation of a newspaper during the camp.
There's not a lot of time to do a newspaper justice, and considering the level of MS students, I would not expect them to be able to pump out full and well-written articles in a couple of days.
Instead, I was thinking of some simpler (I hope) pieces to include.
So far I've come up with:
- School Events (basically describing a photo from the event).
- Opinion Article (Topic question, then "In my opinion. I think")
- Interview (of another student, a teacher, the principal, etc.)
- A Review article (any topic, including music groups, movies, the school...)
- Sports
- Survey
- Hand-drawn Comic
- Recipe
- How-to
- Puzzle(s)
- Poem (acrostic or other types) or creative story
- Map with various descriptions of some interesting locations on Jeju
The camp will include students from all three grades, so I'm hoping the lengthier or more complicated articles will be undertaken by the grade 3s. I'd like to give every student a chance to contribute something they think is worthwhile and interesting, while not having the whole newspaper be a big ball of fluff pieces, comics, and puzzles.
Do you guys have any suggestion for how (or what) I can include (in) a camp newspaper?
Has anyone done a newspaper before in MS that could offer some suggestions on how to best go about it? |

I did a few with my old MS but throughout the semester (not on a camp). 2-4 days isn't much time, but I'll put in my two cents worth.
I used MS Publisher and it came out pretty good. Articles included interviews with new teachers, some pop culture news articles, a bit about various recent outings, a recipe, students' travel articles, some of the more interesting responses form the better students (from during the semester) eg: "What if?" questions, problems facing students (bullying), issues (smoking), book/game/movie/web toon reviews, comics and a wrap-up of some recent sports events.
If any of them have spent any time overseas then chances are they've already written something about it in English. Ask them.
You should also check out the school's website for photos. |

Thanks carpetdope for your suggestions. I'll see if I can check out MS publisher, as I was wondering what programs would be best for putting the newspaper together.
Checking out the school website is a good idea, I've already started looking through the school photos. The "What If" questions and others are good suggestions, too. I'm hoping we'll be able to put something interesting together during the short time we have.
I'd love to hear any other suggestions from people , too. |
