Posted: Mon Oct 13, 2008 9:33 pm Post subject: Help with MARKET DAY class |
|
|
At my middle school, the kids have finished their midterm test. and as many middle school teachers know, at this point, the third graders stop caring. like senioritis back home.
so, i teach them once a week. i could do something like movies and games, but i would rather edumucate them.
so my idea is market day. i have about 8 classes until vacation time. did any of you have a market day in middle or elementary school? where you would make things to sell in the class, and then the last day the teacher would give play money for kids to go buy from each other?
i want to do something like that. kids, in groups would make a product, spend a few classes making it to sell. then maybe two classes making commercials to film (and later show the class). lastly, they can get money and buy from each other.
i know there are many problems, but also i think this can be a ton of fun for the kids.
my first problem i see is the product. they have so little creativity that i think i must provide the options for products. of course they can think of something else, but i need to give some examples. so i need things that they can make or design with little money spent. that is my question for you guys, what products do you think would work.
my ideas so far...
cut out and laminate magazine pictures (sports stars, or singers...)
face painting
drawings or portraits
some kind of cookies or other easy food
that is it...please help... |

Small interesting-looking crafts like origami or balloon animals? I guess they probably don't sell those long balloons in Korea.
The origami bird that flaps its wings is the best one. |

They definitely sell the long balloons in Korea ... My hagwon uses them on most special events ... I have also seen them used out and about at Festivals ... Shouldn't be too hard to track down. |

A good semi-educational activity (depending on how far you want to go with it) is the 'Superhero' project, where Ss design and describe their own superhero and his/her powers.
Find all the good stuff for it here:

Works well w/most levels and ages... |

I don't know if this will work in your case but I worked at a school where we had a market day - suggested by one of the other teachers. We had 5 or 6 classes going at once at the time and each class would take turns visiting other classes to buy their products. We used food exclusively. Each class chose different kinds of food to bring. They made signs in advance as well as price lists. We photocopied small versions of the US dollar and distributed them according to a point system rewarding them for homework and spelling test results.
We also practiced relevant vocabulary before the day in question.
The students really liked it, not least because it involved food. We ran it three years in a row.
You could teach a little about diet and food groups as well if applicable. |
