IF you plan to do much traveling while you are here (plus the 5-6k miles for the trip here) you should get a card.
there are 2 major ones to consider (and a few minor ones that wouldn't hurt).
Skyteam ( http://www.skyteam.com/EN/index.jsp ) and a Star Alliance ( http://www.staralliance.com/en/travellers/index.html ) member card (from your choice of airlines) are the big 2. Between them you are covered for about 40 different international airlines.

really depends which airlines you fly on most....check the partnerships and choose one.
The major ones are : Star Alliance(Lufthansa, United ,Asiana etc), Flying Blue (KLM, Air France, Korean Air, Northwest, Delta etc), Oneworld (British Airways, Quantas, Cathay , Japan Airlines, American Airlines etc)
I`m with Flying Blue because flights to/from home are usually restricted to KLM/Air France. Not particularly happy with them because they include fuel surcharges as part of the `free award tickets` that are extortianate .....US carriers don`t usually have this con in place so i might switch to Northwest`s program purely for that reason.
i think for North Americans in particular, Star Alliance programs are the better bet |
