You were in high school in 1979 and in the 6th AND 9th grades in 1980?

had no idea who he was until the early nineties and so he was just another dead great artist

How about Allen Ginsberg? Now that I mourned. I talked to him after a lecture of his in Toronto four short months before he died.

Vanislander, at least you wear your ignorance on your shoulder. You really have no idea who Sid Vicious was?

I said I don't know punk or metal... I assume he was involved with one or the other.

I know my jazz, big band, blues, R&B, soul, Motown, pop, classic rock, folk, bluegrass and more country and disco than I care to (ugh).

But I emphatically do not know anything about punk and next to nothing about metal. I have hated with a passion that extends down my spine anything I've ever heard by those labels. I believe in the value of an electric guitar but the abuses of that instrument have been sufficient to warrant throwing them all on the rubbish bin of history imo; at the very least, not for me thanks.

Ignorance. Bah. Most people don't know the difference between a Gustav Mahler and a Franz Schubert.

Elvis Presly- Heard it on the radio and saw it on TV in August 1977. I was in grade 8~ going into 9.

Terry Kath - Chicago - January 1978. I cried. I was/am a big Chicago fan.

Sid Vicous- School friends told me. I waited for the movie Sid and Nancy to come out.

John Bonham- Read about it later on.

John Lennon- Was shot on December 8th 1980. I saw it on the evening news at a friend's house. I was/am a big admirer.

Darby Crash- ??

Andy Warhol- Heard about it a little later.

Salvadore Dali- Heard about his death. Really loved his giant paintings @ L. Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredricton.

Mark Heard - He was my favorite songwriter. I was at a music festival when I heard of his death. Was depressed for a month.

Allen Ginsberg died the day before I flew over to Korea. Dylan did a tribute song "Desolation Row" (I believe it was)for him that night I was crossing the puddle in my hometown of Moncton. Wishing I could have been there.

Elvis Presly- he died on my grandmother's birthday. i was 6. she was reading the paper and said something like "oh, fiddlesticks, elvis presley died." i didn't know who he was. for some reason the newspaper was printed on green stock that day. that's what i remember about it.

Sid Vicous- didn't even notice, SPs got zero radio play in my town.

John Bonham- never really noticed zeppelin until my early 30s

John Lennon- saw it on the news. was bummed for weeks. just think of how different the world would be had he lived.

Darby Crash- didn't know who he was until long after i got into punk.

Andy Warhol- heard about it on the news.

Salvadore Dali- heard about it on the news.

Yeah, I can remember the large one dying. I was on my school summer holiday, staying at my Nan's for a few weeks. I can still remember it, because at the time, I couldn't remember who Elvis was (I was only seven ). I seem to remember thinking that Elvis was Yul Brinner or someone. Took me a while to connect dead Elvis with living Elvis. Suffice to say, I didn't grow up hearing his music. No one in my family use to listen to him so it didn't really have any impact on me either then, or later.

Remember the period very well as my older brother was, I suppose, one of the 1st generation of UK Punks'. I can remember reading about his death in one of the Sunday tabloids, but not really being affected by it, that is, not nearly as much as my brother.

Don't remember it, but as I got older, I became a big fan of Led Zep.

Quote:
John Lennon- Was shot around in the early eighties

Another one that I can remember very clearly. I went round to a friends house after school, and while he ate his dinner, I sat in his living room with his old man watching the BBC evening news. As with the others, I wasn't particularly affected by it, partly as I was so young. Either way, I can remember it being a very, very big story over the weeks leading up to Christmas of that year.

No idea who this person is.

Don't remember it. In fact, I didn't even know who Warhol was until I was about 20.

Don't remember it.

This wont mean anything to anyone from outside the UK (possibly Aussies and NZ'ders though), but I can remember watching Tommy Cooper's last performance on TV. He dropped dead of heart attack right at the end of the show, which was being broadcast live.

I remember Jim Henson passing. That was a sad day.

I think Sammy Davis Jr. died that day, too.

The muppets and the rat pack. Now THOSE I definitely recall.

How about when Colonel Sanders died? Supposedly, according to what my dad said years later, I watched the news with him and asked afterwards if Kentucky Fried Chicken would close down. It was our favorite place for take out.
