Who is being forced to stick with the language from the units? Who is using the CD that comes with the textbook?

Who is using supplemental material? What material are you using?

At my GMS, I use the text book for about 25 of the 45-minute lesson (dialogues, gap fills, translation, comprehension questions etc) before then filling the remainder with my own stuff, which usually involves putting and using expressions and grammar points in to some sort of context. If there's time left, then I'll play a word game for five minutes or ask them to correct sentences etc, although I usually run out of time rather than run out of things to do.

My CT at MS is really good and lets me do what I want basically, although I think that she feels obligated to get me teaching from their book in some capacity. Having said that, I'm gradually reducing the amount of time I spend using the book and am hoping that by xmas it'll be down to around 15-minutes per lesson, such is the general shiteness of the material.

my middle school wants me doing all original lesson plans for my 4, yes 4, levels, which i'm definitely not liking much. last year, i worked from the textbook but also supplemented the lesson with my own materials and occasionally did a holiday/game lesson for the kids. i thought it worked out quite well; the kids would pay attention more to my lessons because it was based on the text, yet i could still have some flexibility with my classes.

nowadays, the kids just mess about in my classes as my co-teachers do as little as is humanly possible. they offered once to let me write a couple exam questions, but i haven't heard anything since. maybe i should just start telling the kids that i'm writing half of the exam Very Happy

I just use youtube most of the time. I started them writing a few months ago as I noticed their writing skills suck.

I get them to write and speak in sentences that are 7 words or more. I get them to use the word " and" to speak longer.

I like the Dr. A Finch publications stuff. There are some sheets there that have been good.

I get them to write 5 sentences about the video that day.

I have another room on the side of my class and it is used in the last 25 minutes of class to interview the students.

This has been a great way to get them to talk. They talk a lot in small groups but not in front of the whole class.

There is a Dr Finch sheet that asks them their interests and star sign and it was good for two lessons.

First lesson they had to introduce themselves to me based on thier sheet. ( without looking at the sheet)

Next class they had to introduce one of their friends after studying their partners sheet.

I take 4 students at a time into the interview. It is hard to interview the whole class but I have time for about 80% of them.

It is really important that they are required to talk. Introducing new grammar is a waste of time. Focus on getting them to use the words that they already know.

Listening skills is also very important to work on. I use songs with the lyrics on the screen form youtube.

Things like the sadsongs channel on youtube are good.

When I first arrived at my school, I looked at the textbooks they were using and told my co-teachers there were too many mistakes, they were full of nonsensical crap (the books, that is...LOL), and I wouldn't/couldn't use them.

For my regular classes, I bought good textbooks (a series) and the 'photocopy ajoshie' at my school makes handouts on that cheap, thin, off-white paper. Sure it's illegal, but what the hell... this is K-land. I used to do the photocopying myself using the machine in the staffroom, but I guess the toner/paper bill was getting exhorbinant...LOL. Now my prep time has been cut to about five minutes a week. Cool

For my advanced class, I use a book of material I have produced/gathered/stolen over the years.

I like 'Basics in Speaking' series. It is out of print but you can usually find it.

I also use some Picture dictionary material.
