I found this on another forum and I'm curious about the answer. Let's just say I have a friend that knows a friend that needs to know...
"Here's a question I haven't heard about pension, if one does a midnight run, how does one successfully get their pension? (I have heard the government confirms your employment with your former school, so I would assume this would be an easy way for them to shaft you.) Am I missing something here?"
Ditto for taxes. Can you get partial refund?
I can't understand how you could go to any of these places and apply for these things if you're trying to leave in secret.
My friend of a friend really needs to know soon. |

I have to assume some things...
Like:
A) your "friend" works at a hakwon and will not be paid if they give notice (hence the need for a M.R.).
B) your "friend's" boss actually paid into the pension plan.
-- IF there is any problem with the contributions you/they will NOT be able to address it from abroad so you can kiss it goodbye.
You CAN apply for your pension (assuming your boss paid into it) from abroad but it takes forever. ( http://www.nps.or.kr/jsppage/english/main.jsp )
You need only your ARC number, an exit ticket and a bank account to send the money to, to make a quick stop at the pension office to apply for your refund.
If you can find a couple hours during a business day you can apply for it as soon as you have a ticket. Your boss won't know anything until you leave (unless he has not contributed to it and they call to ask why he is not contributing to your plan).
If you are leaving anyway, this is a great way to pizz in his cornflakes.
Oh, and you didn't say where you are from, but refunds are only possible if you are from AUS, CAN, or the USA.

How do you check if your boss IS paying into pension? Are you supposed to get some papers proving it? Is there going to be someone at the pension office that speaks English?
So far, my friend's friend hasn't gotten anything from the boss other than an arc card, receipts for payment each month, and a bank account. No proof of medical (though they charged them $62 for a month they didn't even have it), taxes or pension (but they do deduct for it). Should there be something????
And there hasn't been a reply about taxes... can you get your refund for taxes without your boss knowing you're leaving?
And you said that my boss wouldn't know anything until my friend's friend leaves... is he going to find out from the pension office? Or will he just find out when there's one less teacher at work? |

IF your friend leaves the pension office will go looking for the last contribution sometime after the date on the ticket so if the boss hasn't figured it out by that time that he is short 1, he will know then.
If he hasn't been paying in (your ARC is your account number) then they will contact him to find out why.
If you have pay slips showing pension contributions they will chase him ASAP. If you have no paperwork then nothing will happen fast enough for someone doing a runner (it takes time to file a complaint and you have to pay up YOUR share of the contributions first).
