| Haven't been to Mongolia, but my girlfriend is Mongolian and from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China which looks like a good visit. The benefit of that area is that it's a bit more industrialized with better services than the Mongolian country, with all the Mongolian culture. Be sure, if you visit Mongolia, to also see that region. |

| I went there back in 2005. I loved it. We stayed out on one of those yurt camps in the middle of nowhere. Unreal landscape, clean air, and nice people, are just few of the things I liked about it. Ulan Bator has a lot of good restaurants, museums, history, etc. We rented an apartment there and mostly explored the city on foot. They have a huge market every weekend just outside the city. Not sure about the mountain biking they offer, but it is a highly recommended country to visit, at least from my experience. If you want the guide's email that we used, send me a pm... Good Luck.. |

Haven't been to Mongolia, but my girlfriend is [Chinese Mongolian] and from the [Chinese Controlled] Inner Mongolia Autonomous region of China which looks like a good place to visit. The benefit of that area is that it's bit more industrialized [by forced immigrant Chinese to control the native Mongolian population] with better services [for the immigrant Chinese] than the Mongolian country, with all the Mongolian culture [marketed, packaged. controlled by the Chinese for maximum profit from dumb Western tourists and for the benefit of the Communist Party]. Be sure, if you visit Mongolia, to also see that region [which is also historic Mongolia but under Chinese control].
Sorry, couldn't resist. |

Haha. Dude, that right on target.
I've been to Inner Mongolian Chinese Province in 2005 with my Mongolian-chinese girlfriend whom I met in Shenzhen. I can tell you that 50% of the people (at least) are ethnic Han and that the whole province is changing into a chinese province. The local chinese don't care much for mongolan ways. In fact, they look down on anything that's not chinese.
I loved the Mongolians I met there, but the chinese were as racist and closed minded as ever.
Go to Mongolia to see the Mongolian peoples and culture. Its an excellent country and it's hard to find good people like the Mongolians! |

Been twice. Once in January 2006 for an outdoor hockey tournament (froze my ass off!!) and once in October 2006 when I opened a bar there (soon went belly up due to idiot partner).
It is like stepping into a time machine and going back 30 years. All the cars are old and beat up (50-50 on right-left side steering wheels), no buildings taller than 6 or 7 stories. The best was seeing a Seoul bus complete with destination signs for Express Bus Terminal and Apgujeong that had been bought by Mongolia when Seoul replaced their old busses.
I went to a Russian war monument on a mountain overlooking Ulaan Bataar and turned to look away from the city. It was nothing as far as the eye could see; no trees, no bushes, no buildings, nothing. It was the smallest I have ever felt in my life. Actually, a really cool feeling.
I hope you get to make the trip and enjoy yourself. Mongolia is a very interesting place!!! |

Cool. The Mongolians there aren't under "Chinese control." Both her mother and father each have high level positions in administration. If you come to see "ethnic Mongolians" there are still many, even if other Han Chinese immigrated to the area. But does seeing someone's facial bone structure really matter that much to you? Everything you've written is flat out wrong. There is no suppression of the Mongolians there. I would know this. My girlfriend is ethnically Mongolian, a student, and has more money than me and my family in Canada. There are opportunities for Mongolians and Han alike in China, unlike Mongolia, where everyone is poor.
How are the Han Chinese "controlling" ethnic Mongolians by living beside them? By having public schools (better than in Mongolia) which offer Mongolian language and culture education to Mongolian students designed by Mongolians?
China is significantly freer and more economically developed than the Mongolian country, where the people sit in squalor and poverty. That means that Mongolians and Han people alike are more free in China. Thank God for the industrialization and freeing up of China (which does not just apply to Han people). |

Man, these posts make me more interested in Mongolia that ever. 5-10 days in the saddle with no cars sounds good too.
I'm moving ahead with this. |

wow. The Party would be proud of you. Sound like one of the more nationalistic classmates of mine.
Now I admit I don't know squat about Inner Mongolia but I am skeptical of what you wrote above for two reasons. One, it sounds exactly like the propaganda I've heard about Tibet and the Uighar regions of china. Two, China is significantly freer? Last time I checked China was controlled by one party whereas Mongolia has had multi-party elections since 1990. |

I went to Mongolia last year for a week at the beginning of August.
I had a wonderful time there. I stayed with a young lady's family who
I met on the airplane for a week.
Mongolia is very poor but the people are very kind and everything is dirt
cheap. I'd love to go and teach English there someday.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Cheers,

I was wondering if anyone's ever taken a tour in Mongolia and if so, would they recommend it?
I've always wanted to go to Mongolia and I'd love to experience the wide open plains in a ger if I get the chance though will only be taking one week's vacation.
I looked on the Mongolian official tourism website and they list some tour operators who seem to have good packages, I was just wondering whether anyone's used them before. |
