You are NOT permanently exempt, especially if you were born in Korea and emigrated as a youth.
There is a very real chance that you would be required to serve.
The US Embassy has a web page that deals with this issue.
(sorry for assuming you are now American)

something about dual citizen people must choose Korean citizenship or American citizenship, Korean citizenship automatically chosen if no action is taken of course. I forgot the age limit to decide its either 22? 24?
I recently got my American citizenship over the summer, but I'm not sure if that was the only change required to prevent being drafted or maybe I'm missing a step? |

You would have needed to renounce your Korean citizenship as well
BUT
A number of "well to do" Koreans used this method to try to avoid the draft and the laws were changed a few years ago (2003?) to PREVENT any Korean Male subject to the draft from renouncing their citizenship to avoid the draft.

If you are adopted and naturalized in your home country, then your Korean citizenship is renounced.
Or if you were born in another country and hold dual citizenship, you'll need to renounce your Korean citizenship.
It's definitely something to make sure of before you arrive in country. They tried to get me to complete military service until I sorted the mess out. |
