The Korean fascination with this games astounds me.

I'm walking in my dong the other night and college students are using it as a drinking game.

I ride the subway today and 2 passengers are using it to kill the boredom.

That's all this game is good for.

Here's my twist when I play. Anybody every use "DYNAMITE!"

Dynamite always wins. Blows up the rock, paper and the scissors.

When I play this game with people, I always use just 1 finger.

They say: "What's that?!"

"Oh this." I reply.

"This is dynamite. It beats everything. I WIN SUCKA!"

They go home crying.

I wouldn't be surprised if they use it in legislative proceedings, marital property divisions following divorce, etc. It's freakin everywhere all the time...

In 'Friends'... Joey used fire (upside down hand with fingers waggling upwards) to beat everyone else... until Phoebe came up with water balloon to beat the fire. Wink

Its actually extremely useful in the classroom, for resolving disputes among the kids. Any sign of a disagreement, i tell them 'rock/scissors/paper". Works like an absolute charm.

The first one, of course, is from Seinfeld.

Mickey and Kramer in the back seat of a cab, I think,

"Rock, paper, scissors..... dynamite."
"Rock, paper, scissors..... dynamite."
"Rock, paper, scissors..... dynamite."

And on their foolishness goes, probably forever.

I taught that bit of nonsense to my students too. Every once in a while, after both sides get bored of always saying dynamite, we'll make the rule - "okay, this time, no dynamite."

"Rock, paper, scissors...... dynamite!"

Not according to Seinfeld. Dynamite beats everything. I believed it then. And I believe it now.

Badmojo,

Do you believe everything you see on TV?

Rock Paper Scissors (RPS)
You have to get solid rules and information from the World RPS Society.

When did RPS begin?
The sport of RPS is believed to date back to 200 BC in Japan where it was used to settle disputes and where it is still in practice today. Better known in America as Ro-Sham-Bo, it is believed to be named for the Comte de Rochambeau, a French General who fought alongside George Washington in the American Revolution. The World RPS Society, the body that oversees and promotes the sport of RPS, was formed in 1918.

Rule Governance
These rules are governed, maintained, published, updated, authorized and approved by the World RPS Society under the guidance and authority of the World RPS Steering Committee. Any changes are in strict violation of the World RPS Society's Responsibility Code. Any changes to the rules require a seven-eighths majority ruling by the World RPS Steering Committee, unless, a temporary waiving or amendment is agreed upon by the players prior to play commencing. All temporary amendments are considered ephemeral unless otherwise agreed upon, but must not include any variant throws beyond the basic trinity such as, but not limited to, dynamite, bird, well, spock, god, water, lightning, bomb, matchstick, water, and/or Texas longhorn.

Who invented RPS?
This is a very difficult question. Every culture seems to lay claim in one way or another to having first invented RPS. We know that Scissors were invented 500 years ago in Italy, but some say that the throw evolved from "blade" which would pre-date scissors by a significant margin.

A fun activity for kids just to waste extra time or something to do during a camp is to have a RPS tournament.

Just draw brackets on the whiteboard and play 2 out of 3. Winner advances.

Championship can be best of 7. Good luck!
