Hi guys,

Needed some alcohol to wipe off the thermal grease from my cpu. i got some stuff from the local pharmacist.

they didn't have pure ethanol, so i got methyl alcohol 99.3%

is that suitable for cleaning a cpu?

also when you clean thermal grease off a cpu, do you take it out of the socket, if so how do you place the cpu down with earthing it/damaging the pins?

cheers

No need to use anything special; I use a dustless cloth to do it. Remove it from the socket and clean it.

There shouldn't be much on there, nor do you need much at all. "Skin-thin" is the go here.

sounds stupid but if you really need to get it off using a solvent, zippo fluid (or other canned lighter fluid) is the way to go.

Obviously don't use too much of it, but squirt some on a cloth and use that. Should disolve that goop properly,

zippo fluid leaves a residue. 99% alcohol is your best bet, besides a specialty product like Acti-Clean or something like that. Try and use a lint-free material to clean the old paste off, I used to use coffee filters.

Here's an article.

Basically, isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.........like an old cleaning cloth for eye-glasses.
