I've been teaching ESL for a long time (secondary, university levels, institutes and private) and have a lot of international experience on several continents including Japan in late 1970's. I have BA and MA in English. I'd like a change for a couple of years but would like to be able to save a little money as well. Are there any opportunities for me in Korea? Earlier this year I applied, unsuccessfully, to several Korean universities. I can also teach English language/literature in an international school setting though I prefer older students. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Most universities whether they advertise it or not strongly prefer those are are "already living in Korea". This way they don't have to pay airfare and they at least know you stuck it out about a year or so here in Korea so you are not as much of a threat to pull a runner.
What you could do is just get here in order to get your foot in the door for better opportunities later on. In other words accept something a little less than what you really desire just to be here. Stick it out a year and then go for the gold. If you are seeking a university postion a good idea is to time it when you arrive so that when your year is up it will coincide with the university start dates (about March 1st and September 1st). |

Universities in general don't really discriminate based on age, especially if you have the experience to back it. Most interviews these days have a demo portion though, so not being on the ground is a huge disadvantage and probably won't see you many offers. |
