Flight, Ship Departures Interrupted for 5 Days

By Bae Ji-sook

A thick, polluted fog is blanketing the peninsula, halting dozens of flights and vessel departures. Moreover, the Ministry of Environment has advised citizens to refrain from going outdoors to avoid the polluted dust.

On Monday morning, airports nationwide announced they would be halting the arrival and departure of flights due to thick fog caused by high atmospheric pressure. Incheon International Airport said four flights had to be detoured to Fukuoka Airport and Jeju Island.

As visibility in Incheon and Gimpo marked 500 meters and 200 meters respectively
, 25 domestic flight departures were canceled and several international flights were forced to take a detour. The fog faded late in the morning, but authorities expect the phenomenon to continue through Wednesday.

Also, a reported 17 ferries to islands in the West Sea were canceled while the departure of others was delayed due to thick sea fog.

The Korea Meteorological Administration explained that warm air currents from a southerly direction and the West sea are affecting the atmosphere, causing the unusually warm weather and fog. However, after some expected rain on Wednesday, the weather is expected to return to normal along with the clearing of the fog.

Meanwhile, the environment ministry said dust in the air in Seoul was unusually thick. ``The particles in the air measured around 120 micrograms per square meter, twice the usual,'' ministry official Lee Sung-han said.

The density hasn't reached the government standard of 200 to post a warning, but the ministry advised the very young and elderly to refrain from outdoor activities. Health experts advised people to wear masks when going out and to wash their hands after returning home.
