I just received an awkwardly worded email from KEB. I'm not quite sure what they're tyring to pitch... seems like it was written by a middle school student in a high level English class. Kinda strange (but not surprising) that they wouldn't hire a native speaker to draft an email they'll be sending out to probably thousands of customers/potential customers. Anyway, I had a laugh at some of this:
"In this financial turmoil and plummeting exchange rates there is still something that you can benefit from. The increasing won/dollar exchange rate gives you a never before opportunity to receive wire transfers from you country or abroad. So please stop by your nearest KEB branch and avail of our special discounts on inward remittance!
If you don't have a KEB Account Don't worry! You can still receive wire transfer without A/C if the beneficiary details include your name, passport number and contact details in Korea. our staff will immediately notify you. Moreover you can avail of a 30% preferential rate while exchanging to Korean Won!
The more efficient way is , of course, to open an A/C at a KEB branch. To do so you just need to bring your passport or ID to our branch." |

I got it too and was surprised. They seem to have neglected the foreigner market in Korea for a long time. Though, I must say over the last five years their service has improved (many of you will find that hard to believe.) I think it is great that they are making an effort to make KEB a more foreigner friendly bank. Of course I am not naive...I know they are doing this to increase their deposits . |

So, they treat us like crap. Now they want us to bring in foreign currency for them?
They can kiss my ass.

I didn't get one and I have two accounts with them.
Are you sure it's not some kind of scam. You think they'd send the email to their customers, too. |

My sentiments too, Diver. They made it as hard as possible to send money. They never notified us when the bank rules changed regarding transfer amounts and fees, but they damn sure want to get their greedy little mitts on our cash. Eff you, KEB! It is so Korean...not give a rat's ass about your customers, treat them like shit and then expect that you'll coming running to them with your money. It may work with the Koreans, but it don't work with me. Again, go screw yourself, KEB. |

It is probably just directly linked to the current push to get in as much foreign currency in as possible as part of the current economic crisis. There was mention of similar things on the news last night. |

Looks like they're fishing for Dollars. Not good news for those holding a lot of won, IMO. |

30%? They don't have a lot of faith in the won.
That is VERY bad news. |

That would be 30% off the spread (or half of the spread) NOT 30% on the spot rate of the currency. |

I'm not a KEB member but do bank with KB.
I was sick of always going into the branch and doing wire transfers every month. Last month, the branch I went to had an English speaking Korean girl working there and set it up for me that now I can do wire transfer at the ATM. I just have to push the "overseas remittance" button and select my account and how much I want to send and boom. Done! Transfer cost is only $5,000 won and she told me I'd get a better rate.
So make the switch if KEB won't do it for you! haha

I'd say this was a scam. It's exactly the same as many I get from other places/banks. All fraud. Most of them of Nigerian origin. They want your bacnk details, address and passport number/social security number etc.
If really from KEB they'd surely want the ARC number anyway.
IMHO anyway. DOn't ever send all your details in reply to some random email.
ANd KEB HELPING foreigners????? Doubt it! |
