I'm having trouble inputing Korean with an American computer. I'm currently using a Mac with OSX. It's easy enough to enable Korean input, I'm given the option of using the following input methods:

2-Set Korean
3-Set Korean
390 Sebulshik
GongjinCheong Romaja
HNC Romaja

What method do you use and why? Is it best to learn a native input method instead of trying to type words out in some romanized form? I type in Japanese often and it's very easy to use romaji, but I find when I try to do the same with Korean I get stuck up on a lot of vowels.

Thanks in advance!

I enabled the language bar on my Windows XP equipped Sony Vaio (built for the American market). So, I just use the Korean keyboard layout for Hangeul.

I find that it's easier for me to use the Kana when I type in Japanese on the same computer.

Find a picture of a Korean keyboard and figure out which one that is. I think it's pretty much 100% universal, so you don't want to be using something else. Definitely not romaja. Something like "Pyeongyang" becomes 10 keystrokes instead of 6.

Anybody else notice how tidily Korean fits on an American keyboard? It's pretty neat.

lanems,

Click Apple. - System Preferences - International - Input Menu - Select "Show input menu in menu bar"

Next, setup keyboard shortcuts. My recommendation is shift-option-command-[ and shift-option-command-]. These are easy to finger quickly and don't interfere with other hot key configurations.

2-Set Korean is sufficient.

Once the input menu is in the menu bar, you can click it to change as well. If you need a keyboard visualization of the Hangeul layout, select "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the input menu.

Note: Most of the characters are single-key, but some require shift-key to be entered (i.e., ㅂ is key. ㅃ is shift-key.) When looking at the keyboard viewer hold down the shift key and you can see the changes.

I use HNC Romaja since I don't have the characters on my keyboard. If you do know the keys by memory, you can use 2-Set Korean.

고맙습니다!

Now to memorize these keys! The keyboard viewer is very helpful though.

For Japanese I use the romaji input editor since it let's you easily switch from kana to hiragana with only a single mouse click, and you can choose the kanji from a popup, but with Korean it's a lot easier for me to use the Korean keyboard layout since, like the other poster mentioned, it shortens the amount of typing and Korean doesn't lend itself well to romanized typing input methods.

Here's a Korean keyboard with the English letters as well:

Try changing the character encoding on your web browser. It seems Dave's ESL is encoded using Korean (EUC-KR). If this doesn't work try Western (ISO-8859-1) or Unicode (UTF-8).

Firefox: View - Character Encoding - [Selection of choice].
Safari: View - Text Encoding - [Selection of choice].
Opera: View - Encoding - [Selection of choice].

For other browsers, I have no clue. Though, I suspect they'll be similar.

Is it possible to get any keyboard cover with Korean on it to aid learning the layout? I think I'm starting to get the hang of it using the software keyboard viewer, but having the keys labeled somehow would really speed things up.

For that matter, are there any other kind of typing aids available to help familiarize yourself with typing in Korean? I suppose the best way is just to type something everyday until you are familiar with it.

Just go down to your local stationery shop or Home plus/E-Mart/whatever's school supplies section and get those small Hangeul stickers. Ensure you get the ones that are on transparent film soyou don't cover up the English letters on your keyboard.

If you're interested in learning how to touch type in Korean, go to your local Internet Caf/PC 방. They'll usually have the Hangeul Office pack installed. One program is a typing tutor. (I just checked the spare computer in my office; it has the typing tutor also.) It's pretty fun and it'll wow your students and the other teachers when they see you typing at a high speed in Korean on an American computer with no Hangeul on the keys!

Awesome, thanks! This will be super helpful if I put in enough time to learn it. My home computer doesn't have hangul on it...
