I'm curious as to what happens in the first few days. When do all these tests (medical) take place? When am I supposed to get my ARC? I'm more interested in the ARC, as I believe I will need it to open a bank account. Right? Plus, I'm assuming it'll be my main form of identification, aside from my passport, so I would ideally like to have that asap so that I can just leave my passport somewhere safe in my apt.

Oops...just realized I posted in the teaching section. If possible, mods, please move this into the general forum. Thanks!

You can't get your ARC until you have had the medical tests...then how quickly it happens depends on your school. It's in your best interest to
push for speed.

i opened my account without my arc, so don't worry too much about that, plus it will take a few days to get it sorted out after the medical

if it's a PS, they should "assign" an english speaking korean to show you around. This may or may not include: helping you sign up for a cell phone, grocery shopping, medical check, visit to immigration (after your med check is complete), showing you subways/buses, and maybe helping you set up internet.

I am/was under the impression you have to get your ARC card before you can get a checking account. You have to have a checking account before you sign up for internet or cell phone, however, my PS korean chauffer used their name and checking account and transferred it to my name once i got my account set up.

They should assign a korean, but there is a good chance they don't.

I never was given one, however I didn't really need one to show me around. All depends if you can stand on your own two feet or not.

Remember if they do give you your own personal Kimchistani to show you around town, they have been at work all day as well, and probably feeling quite tired, probably would quite like to go home and see their family. Bare that in mind when asking for help doing things.

Great, thank you all for your responses. I don't mind walking around and finding everything on my own. If my school does end up providing me with some assistance, then great. If not, no worries. I just wasn't sure how soon I'd get all that stuff done.

Make sure they give you a copy of their business certificate for when you go and do the ARC.

get your medical done asap. whether or not an ARC is essential to opening a bank account, i don't think is top priority; you need your ARC in order to get health insurance

Hmmm, what's the purpose of the business certificate? And when you say "they" are you referring to the school or the people at the office where I get my ARC from?

Thanks, nomad-ish. I'm basically gonna try to get everything done asap so that I get it out of the way and not have to worry about it.
