Becaused of the economic situation in America, and the fact that I don't want to take a huge loss when exchanging money this March, I'm thinking of setting up a study room at my apartment and staying an extra year. How is this done though? Is it basically like a small hagwon in your house? Someone told me that he gets 2-3 students to study with his wife, while another 2-3 students study with him. After an hour, both groups switch. Is this normal? If anyone has done this before, please PM me so I can get more information. Thanks

No, I'm not interested in who teaches privates. When you teach privates, you usually meet someone at a coffee shop, or you teach them in their home.

I'm interested in setting up a study room at MY house, which I thought was legal on an F2.

If you don't have any info, then stop replying moron. Did I say it was my friend? No. I said "someone." This person sent me a PM on Daves a long time ago with that information. Stop being an ass.

I believe you can get a D-8 visa for only 50,000,000 won which is a sweet deal. As well, the 50,000,000 is just a deposit, so you get it back. I think it's a pain in the butt to get it all sorted out legally though, so start early.

I was in an officetel recently that had 2 study rooms in it. Actually the setup was really cool with table, chairs and whiteboards in 2 rooms. I think that's the type of situation you're referring to.

I'm sure that the extra revenue far exceeds the cost of renting an apartment big enough to accomodate that kind of working space.

I say good luck.

I dont have any advise or information about this, sorry. I mostly posted so that I can follow the thread as my wife and I have had similar thoughts. I am not sure about the legalities though. Good luck with it all. There are a lot of these things around though (mostly Korean owned etc) so I think the revenue would be good.

I read through the entire thread, but it didn't mention anything about setting up a study room at home. I know you registered with the local -gu, but you can only charge about 5,000 won/student. Are you teaching them at your house? If so, are you the hagwon, or do you just help them with their homework from their hagwon?

KoreanAmbition - How would the D8 help me and why would I need that if I had an F2? Doesn't the F2 give me permission to teach at my home, as long as I register and pay taxes?

Interesting that you mention the economic mess. I'm just wandering if those that teach privates will start lowering their rates to try and get extra classes so as to make up for the short-fall we're all feeling at the moment.

Why would you lower rates? So you can work more, for less? If anything, it's better to keep rates the same or raise them. If your students have been with you for a while then a 5 or 10,000 won/hr raise probably won't lead them to cancel the class, especially if you have more than one student in the class.

Lower the rates so as to attract more students. Maybe you'd get a bigger uptake if you knocked your hourly rate charge down. Then again, if you're in a city, maybe student numbers aren't the problem. Down here in smallville however, potential privates are thin on the ground.

If you have your F2, then all you have to do to set up a study room is to go to your local 'GU' office and register. I think they'll want to make sure that you have a separate class room use room.

Mind you, I've never done it. I have a couple of friends who have, however, and they said it was very simple to set up. Just make sure you stay up with your taxes. Best thing to do would be to go to your local government offices and ask first hand. Good luck.
