A bit about my situation:
I teach at an Girl's Middle School with three co-teachers.
One of the co-teacher just uses me as a tape recorder in his curriculum, very structured, he keeps discipline and I occasionally make power points for extra practice with model sentences.
Second co-teacher also keep the discipline in the class, uses the curriculum and is more open to free lessons that I've been supplementing with important concepts such as reading time and time expressions(pertinent to the current chapter).... good so far.
Third co-teacher speaks very little english, is an old dude and doesn't keep any discipline in his class. The third years are fantastically disinterested in English. It doesn't help that the first week I discovered the hard way that power point lecturing, in even what i consider basic and emphasized English, about Mysteries of the World(the chapter they were on), is a set up for failure. The problem is that I'm not getting much guidance from my third co-teacher on what he wants and further I suspect that he teaches cut and dry from the book and students probably put in a half-ass effort due to lack of discipline.
Any advice is appreciated, I'd like to make even a small difference if I can. O, and I've taught for a grand total of one week and quickly trying to learn how to do a competent job as a teacher. |

With the first 2 teachers id go with it for now. Youre only new, dont wanna step on anyones toes etc and they are making use of you etc in THEIR class. Just let it go now and maybe in the future try and get some more input/control etc once youve been there a few months.
As for #3
What is HE doing in the class? sitting back and letting you take control of all of it? If so, then id suggest taking control of discipline as well. Kick kids out, make em stand, if hes not going to do it, then you should!
As for the lack of interest. Welcome to Korea.
At this stage id recommend to experiment with various lessons, teaching techniques to see what these kids respond best to and go with that. |
