Hi,
I've been in Korea for about a month now and I'm looking to start a reading club/creative writing class with people that I don't have to speak slowly for.
I'm an avid reader and I've always had people to talk to about the books I read but now I'm suffering from a dearth, or rather, non-existence of like-languaged people. Somehow, it seems a waste to call overseas to discuss Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress.
I also took a creative writing class in college and it was one of my favorite classes. I always meant to participate in another, but never got around to it.
I'm looking to organize a little group of people who genuinely enjoy reading and writing, as well as discussions on current events, cultural idiosyncrasies, etc.
I'm seeking discussions in which my contribution is not limited to, "How many ears do you have?" "What color is a zebra?"
Anyway, I'm a 24yr. old Korean-American girl. Grew up in Chicago, spent the last 6 yrs. in NY. Doesn't mind teaching English but worried about the lack of stimulation it provides.
I've browsed through the board and the thought of trying to weed out undesirables has crossed my mind but at this point, I don't really mind if you are incredibly irritating. Just as long as you are articulately annoying and can hold a good debate/conversation/yelling match/etc. in English. |

so you're offering a class on creative writing?
as in you'll be able to teach me how to write creatively?
the question is: can you guarantee results? |

With your av, girl got no game.
I like the whole "I took a creative writing class" bit. She sounds like a lit kid trying to break out. |

Awww, take it easy on the girl!..She's new and wants to socialize / share book ideas, etc...
Tho, I do think the OP should be a little clearer in her intentions.
Is this teaching or discussing?
It's not entirely clear to me (and I suspect others). Are your intentions to instruct or simply shoot the literary breeze?? |

I just want to do a reading/writing club so my daily conversation isn't limited to "What does 'angry' look like. Ae-in-gree. Repeat." Not that I don't enjoy that, I just don't want to be stuck in literary duldrum by the time I leave Korea.
Seriously, why are some of you so up in arms. Is this the place where people go to needlessly defend themselves? It's just a reading club. I'm not trying to sell you anything.
In response to your comments, I am like a "lit kid trying to break out." And why do I "need game?" I'm not trying to seduce you into reading with me...
And who's Tiberious aka Sparkles? Did you really take the time to post just to make a negative comparison of me with someone I don't even know? Ehhh...why?
Oh, and Landros - is the game football or soccer? Football, I might be interested. Are there other girls on the team?
And thank you, pidgin- you uttered the only helpful comment from the mob that gathered to throw stones on my book club. I agree- I should have stated my intentions better. So... I have no plans of teaching a class; I'm obv. not qualified. I want to participate in book discussions, hear other people's opinions of characters and plots and themes. I also want to incorporate creative writing and do free writing, picture writing, journal keeping, topic writing, etc. I just found that writing exercises are usually better when they're done in a group of interested people.
So again, if there are people around the Bundang or Kangnam area who are interested in reading/writing and want to "shoot the literary breeze," please post or pm me so we can set up a meeting. |

I would be up for something like this. Give no heed to the monkies on this forum, showing them anything but silent condescension only riles them further. Let me know if you can get a couple people together and tell me where and when. Just think of the trolls here as the annoying boy that alienates the old country peasant with the delicious salty rocks. They will never obtain your old folk songs. haha |

It's good to see that the old warm and inviting Dave's ESL Forum Welcome is still intact...
I'd also be interested in something like this. |

He's some dude that fits the criteria rather well, and the owner of a sexy Shih Tzu to boot.* (I thought I had been making a favorable comparison, oddly enough.)
