I've been here a month and a half and have had a Pusan Bank account since my first day. I can't figure out online banking and I haven't received a bank statement. How do the rest of you keep track of your money or do you know the secret to online banking/bank statements?

Couldn't you just check at the ATM? Does Korea have the booklet that you put into the ATM and it updates it for you like in Japan?

Yep, use your bankbook. Walk up to the machine, do not insert your card. Open your bankbook to the last page with printed statements. On the touchscreen of the atm, press the 'button' second from the top on the right of the screen. It will prompt you to insert your bankbook.

If you've been here for 2 months and haven't updated your bank book, doing at the ATM for the 1st time isn't a good idea. Chances are, the pages in your book will fill up very fast and you'll need another book. My advice to you is to take your bank book into the bank and have them update it for you. The same thing happened to me and I filled up an entire book in one update because I hadn't updated it since I first got here. Update it on a weekly basis at the ATM.

Ah, that's why I see people in the ATM line with their bank books.

Thanks for your help. I'll just add this to my running list of "Things People Failed To Tell Me To Survive in Korea." It's pretty long.

When the bank book is filled, I just get a new one from the bank teller?

Okay, so when I put my bank book in the ATM, all the options are in Korean! The only English options I get are check balance, withdraw, and transfer. I asked my co-teacher what the button would say in Korean and she couldn't remember.

Can anyone post the Korean instructions for updating my book?

It should say something like "통장정리". 통장 is your bankbook, and it's normally the only option on the main menu with that in it. If in doubt, ask the security guard, they'll normally help you.

At my Pusan Bank in Choryang-dong there is an off white machine only for the bank book. There are no buttons. Just open your book to page 1 and stick it in. It's automatic.

Jeez, how long were you here before you updated it, and how many transactions do you do a month?

I've been here about a year and half and I'm still on my first book (bout 1/3 left). I only update my book when I send money home which is every 2 months or so.

I almost never use cash so every one of my card purchases were on the book, which took a lot of space.
