Hey All,

I've been gone for some time and have been busy; I hope all has been well. It's that time again....my wife's PC is slowly dying and she has told me that as my Christmas present, I may give her my current PC and build a new one! Shocked There is no price limit.

Therefore, I am proposing the following as I will import a lot of stuff. Tell me the pros and cons and what YOU would buy.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4312343&csid=_22

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3732394&CatId=3485

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3930709&CatId=3669

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&Sku=ULT-LSP650

The rest I would buy in Korea (i.e. case, fan, etc.).

Thoughts?

Wow! CL! For once you're bang up to date on your choices!

They're all great kit. I wish I had the money for a new i7 system.

The only downside is that i7 CPU's, LGA1366 motherboards and DDR3 RAM are so pricey right now because they're just out.........but, I would never tell anyone who has the money to play the waiting game. If you can afford it, get the best out there.

If you really are spending.....then the new nVidia GTX295 will be released in the next few weeks. It will take back the crown from ATI as fastest single-slot card in the world. An absolute monster. Two GTX280's screwed together.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-295,2107.html

And the price is not a total shocker. Should be less than $500 in the States on release. God knows how much in Korea though......

Whatever you get, if it plays GTA4 at 40FPS or more....then you're in for a treat!!

I don't have time to give a detailed response, but first and foremost, get a BETTER PSU. You want to get a GTX 280 with that small a PSU? Get a better one, like from PC Power & Cooling or Corsair.

I doubt you're planning on using Tiger Direct, but I've had problems with them sending me the wrong stuff in the past.

Wow. I wish I could drop 1,500,000won on the CPU,GPU and RAM. Run the total price past your wife before you spend the money. She said there's 'no price limit' but sometimes communication in a marriage leaves something to be desired. My wife thinks 700,000 is an expensive PC and 300,000 and expensive bicycle. Of course if you're DINK and she knows what you're planning to spend then go get your rocks of. You lucky bastard.

Anyway if it was me I'd probably skip the i7 and go for a Phenom2 or Core quad. I'm sure i7s are the fastest things out but the price performance doesn't quite stack up imo. I'd put in a ATI4870(or x2) and call it a day. I'd spend the extra on getting a really nice screen. It all depends on how much you want the best machine now, and how much you want to save your readies to have the best machine next year. I wouldn't get the i7 until the revision next year anyway. I understand that right now motherboard and RAM solutions for it are overpriced related to the performance benefits it brings.

OP, when you do get your new system set up, if you don't mind, post back here a tell us how much it set you back. My laptop is getting old and I might go all out on a desktop at some point. I'd love to know how much it'd be.

BTW, GTA 4 is unplayable, right?

Agreed. Something like this would be more in line, imho.

I probably will as I used them to build my first "mosnter" 3 years ago. I had zero problems with them (had items shipped to my sister in Florida, then, she shipped them here). Everything is still purring like a kitten 3 years later.

You left out an important piece of information. What did you get her for Christmas? Cool

HI OWT,

My wife knows how I am and she really appreciates the honesty. She said this is her gift to me. Last night we were taking a shower and she asked me about it again. I told her that as of right now, it is looking like $1,500. She asked one simple question: What does the $1500 PC have that a much cheaper one you can build not have? I told her that in order for me to play my PC games and any games in the next couple of years, I will need a powerful PC. She knows I play a lot of multiplayer games online and knows that I save a LOT of money playing games rather than going out and getting trashed every night. To further it, I am here with her and when she wants me off the PC, I get off. So, she has no resentment towards me getting a new PC. She understood and said okay to $1,500 last night. Smile

I am very honest with her and it helps.

lol. actually, we didn't exchange gifts. Rather, we went out the 24th and 25 all day and all night. She told me yesterday that taking her out like that, spending time with her like that, and having so much fun with her like that made this Xmas the best she has ever had.

Today, I will compare performance and cost and see if it really is worth it to throw down the 1500, or, downgrade a little and save a lot of money. Although, I am one that usually wants the biggest and baddest...

Sure, no problem. I am also comparing the same type of parts here in Korea. So far, for the same things, Korea is MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. Furthermore, they don't even have the stuff I am looking for (at least some of the items).

Why would GTA4 be unplayable?
