Why you should not have a dog or cat in the house if you have a small child. |
The article says you shouldn't have a pet raccoon, and that you should wash your hands after handling dog and cat feces. Who doesn't know that? And who doesn't know that small children need supervision (whether there are animals in the house or not)? Was this research really all that groundbreaking? |

Most parents keep their child and pet apart 24/7? No way.
It's simple logic. Dogs may well be exposed to coon dung and track in a dangerous parasite. Small children like to play with the family dog and are at risk of being exposed. If you live in an area with raccoons and you want to have a child, it's safer if you get rid of your cat or dog before having a child or simply never letting your dog out of the house. |

Dogs will roll in anything dead.
I wouldn't stop my kids from having dogs however because I'd say the chances are pretty low of getting this disease or parasite or whatever, and I believe kids should have a dog to play with. You learn alot of things in taking care of an animal at a young age.
My Grandad trains sheep dogs and my Dad always had at least 3 around the house. I had my own dog from a young age and I wrestled with it, slept with it on the floor, fed it, washed it, etc. Kids need that. |

But oddly parents protect their children from other things that have a low probability. I'm not sure why even a small chance of blinding your child is worth the risk of pet ownership. |

Well it depends exactly how likely it is.
In Bramble's case I wouldn't worry anyway. If that is her dog in her avatar I doubt its ever seen a field anyway. Why in the name of God would you put a jacket on a dog? |

Just from memory, I recall reading several times that, statistically, kids who live with pets have less health problems. |

True. Data seems to suggest too clean living isn't good for a kid's developing immune system. Still there are better ways to expose kids to benign dirt without the risk of giving the kid a parasite that will blind him. |

She goes out for walks, don't worry. And I don't have any human kids, but anyone who does and who uses them as an excuse to dump their nonhuman kids deserves condemnation in the strongest terms. Just make sure the human kids wash their hands, and they'll be fine. |

dogs don't need walks, they need to attack the landscape. They need to bound through wet fields, roll in dirt, run 200 m away then run back almost knocking u over when he jumps at you, they need to hosed down when u get home and run some more to shake the water off him, they need to swim parallel to you in the ocean as you throw stones in front of them.
dogs in jackets taking little walks thru the city is one of the most pathetic things i can imagine. |
