I'm supposed to be going up to Seoul!
Just wondering what the running/marathon scene is like there. Where do people normally run? are there lots of races?
Any running groups?

A lot of people run along the Han River. It has concrete paths on both sides all the way along, so it's useful. I've seen other people running in other places too, but remember, it's a big city.
There are many races. Some weeks there will be 2-3 in Seoul alone (usually in the spring and fall).
There are a few running groups that I know of, and probably a lot that I don't know of.

If you want a group there are harriers and normal running clubs. If you like running on your own the river and its tributaries all have very nice unbroken paths. I've gone down about 4 hours on my river until it met The Han and I've run in the opposite direction about 3 1/2 hours and still havnt run out of path.
No traffic to navigate through, only the occaisional annoying cyclist who doesnt want to use the seperate bicycle lane.
Seoul is actually a nice city for running because of the river paths. I'd be out there today if it wasnt raining |

how exciting!!
What running gear would you suggest bringing or do you wish you had brought?
How cold does it get? The warmest cold weather stuff I have is.. a fleece zip up vest and capri tights - would you suggest a jacket or long tights?
Also, would I look like a foolish westerner if I brought my hydration belt? |

It doesn't get very cold, at least if you come from Canada like I do. There are a few days at -5 or -10, but they were very rare. I spent all winter waiting for it to get cold, and then I realized it was much. Mostly it's just at or below freezing. You need a jacket and pants for sure, yes.
I've never seen anyone wearing a hydration belt, but I've seen 180-pound middle-aged men running 4-hour marathons in 5-ounce shoes. Whatever works for you. |
