Hey guys, the search function is not working so I decided to ask this here:

How does one obtain a criminal record check in Canada? How long does it take? Are there any other legal forms I need to get before going to Korea? I would ideally like to start school in January.

Thanks!

OH GOD I REALLY WANT TO SWEAR! Come on have your tried google

http://tinyurl.com/2dgcd7c

First link! Follow directions.

Hint use for searching ESL cafe use words like CRC (Criminal Record Check) or CBC (Criminal Background Check). RCMP - Royal Canadian Mounted Police. And patience! Lots of patience the search here is trippy.

Have you got a recruiter yet because if you can not find out how to do a CRC check by yourself - get one!

And why am I being a dick - because every week we get this question in one for or another. Trying lurking a bit longer and reading a bit more of the site. Hint - FAQ ahh another acronym meaning FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS!

I just read that the processing time usually takes 4 months? Can that be true? Would I still be able to come to Korea and work while it is still processing?

Police Services, government departments, and accredited private fingerprinting companies that utilize electronic fingerprinting devices are able to provide certified results for Criminal Records Checks in approximately three business days when there is no match to a fingerprint holding.

Careful with that! All it takes is the wrong letter head or print out and you will be refused.

Quote:
ㅇ Must submit a Police Certificate or Criminal Record Check issued within the
last 6 months only by RCMP or Municipal Police in BC, AB, SK, Yukon, NT.
* A certificate from third party agencies(i.e. Commissionaires or Truecheck.ca) is
not acceptable.

Advice - Try everything. See if you can get the three days check but still get a regular one done too.

I just spoke with my local RCMP and they said that i needed a "Police Certificate". She said that the processing time is instant, and I will get the results the same day.

I'm guessing this is similar to a criminal record check but less extensive.

Did anyone else get this, and is it valid in Korea?

thanks,

Okay I just spoke to the Korean consulate and she said that a Police certificate is "fine". I was very confused, as this website http://www.eslteacherrecruiter.com/federal-criminal-record-check-korea/

is saying that, as of 2011, only nation wide criminal record checks are acceptable.

Yes, I used an RCMP police certificate in the past. Key word in the past! Now I THINK that an RCMP police certificate which you can get at any detachment will be fine in the future, just that city and provincial will NOT.

Which consulate? I'm dealing with Vancouver and it has been a nightmare.

In the past for me and what I did in Vancouver is I went to North Vancouver and went to the RCMP detachment. I got a police certificate not a fingerprint check. The only real problem for me was you needed an address. Also a reason why you need one. Just print off Korea E-2 Visa regs page and say it is for an overseas job. I then went to the consulate and got the CRC verified at the Korean consulate. Showed my passport and paid the 2.20 - I think it is 4.40 now. Now things have changed! So before you go to the office you need to get the CRC notarized. I had went to one that was a block away from the consulate for my degree. When I got my CRC verified they did then and there I had to wait a little but it was verified.

So got to RCMP get a police certificate - NOT Vancouver Police or Provincial police - RCMP. Might have to wait an hour or two. Or just come back the next day to pick it up. Go Downtown - get CRC notarized. Take notarized copy to Consulate. Get it verified. make sure you have your passport.

Now I think the recent CRC changes do not take effect till 2011 but for the sake of pedantic people and bureaucracy get a national aka RCMP check done.

NOW my experience was 2 years ago with an RCMP police certificate. As to recent changes I do not know if it will be accepted. Maybe the Korean government wants fingerprint only criminal record checks! Also maybe the consulate has become slower and will not do right away!.

Good Luck

Hi everyone, I was the one who put together that search mentioned above, but now I have built a much better way: http://SearchESLCafe.com

It's based on Google, so it supports all the standard search bells and whistles.

Plus, for one-word searches, you can do stuff like this:
http://crc.searchESLCafe.com

for multi-word searches, you can_use_underscores_to_separate_the_words like this:
http://criminal_record_canada.searchESLCafe.com
