Al Franken plays it straight in Senate race
Daniel Dale
Staff Reporter
So a comedian walks into a Minnesota Senate race.
He is not funny at all.
Al Franken, the former Saturday Night Live star and political satirist, is running as a Democrat against Republican Senator Norm Coleman and the Independence Party's Dean Barkley, former governor Jesse Ventura's campaign manager. Even by the low comedic standards of a congressional body that once included Al Gore, Franken's campaign has been humourless.
"No hijinks," said Steven Schier, a political science professor at Minnesota's Carleton College. "That's by design. He's boring by design."
And no joke he's winning.
Franken, seeking to project earnestness as Coleman attacked his funnyman past, trailed in almost every poll through September. He has led by an average of 2.4 percentage points in polls released in October. In the costliest and perhaps the nastiest Senate contest in the nation independent groups and both candidates have bombarded television viewers with negative ads voters warmed to Franken as the crisis on Wall Street deepened.
"The spotlight was on Al Franken and some less-than-flattering aspects of his career as a comedian. But the financial crisis really took the spotlight off of Al Franken," said Schier. "And that helps him. Now he gets to be a critic, and Norm Coleman is on the defensive.".... |

Political satirist is the key word. This guy wrote some devastating attacks on the Republicans, and especially Rush Limbaugh.

Who can forget that classic, "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" ?

He got it right, of course. |
