Hey Guys, my second month in Korea and for the life of me I cannot figure out why I cannot connect to any Half Life 2 TF2 server or any other server for that matter when it comes to gaming. I am originally from Ireland and was part of a clan in the U.K so not being able to game in my free time kind of sucks.
Here are my details:
I live in a dorm supplied by my Hogwan, they also supply the internet free of charge. I have gone to the site www.whatismyip.com on my computer and one other to discover that we all have the same IP even though I know the IP has to be manually inputted when you move in. I figure I am behind some kind of router that is preventing access? Also when I have done a reverse port scan, only ports 22 and 23 are open?
Any suggestions? I have spoken to my school and they have no problem with me purchasing my own internet, how would I go about doing that, thanks. |

You are definitely behind a router or a proxy. Ports 22 and 23 are for SSH and Telnet traffic, meaning they actively don't want you to be able to play games, use filesharing programs, and anything else fun on the internet on their connection.
I don't think there's really any way to get around it, but I've never had to deal with such a situation so I never really looked into it. Can you get internet service from another provider in this apartment?
I guess if the games have an option for what port to use, try setting it to 22 or 23.
Anyway, good luck. |

Umm, reverse port scan means the ports are blocked coming INTO the school. Most games do not require incoming ports open to play them online, unless you are doing something like hosting a server.
It should still work for the same reason you can use a typical home router (which blocks all incoming ports by default) and connect to (in your case) steam just fine. Outgoing connections should work. |

He said that he couldn't connect to servers, so I just assumed that his dorm was filtering traffic. |

When you do get the internet, its sweet here. the only problem with gaming is the pings on most servers will be astronomical, although you wont have any problem with tf2, just the more niche games like red orchestra etc.
Do you play anything else? |

pings are all relative to how much bandwidth the server is giving you.
Ive played CSS on Aus and NZ servers and get better ping from NZ servers cos they give me more bandwidth. Ping doesnt change with downloading either...and dld speeds are still super good while im in game.
Of course korean servers give ping of 4 or 5 which is amazing...but the map rotations are lame. |

Ping has nothing to do with bandwidth. Ping is a measure of how long it takes for your data to get the server. Bandwidth is a measure of how much data can be sent. |
