Just to be safe, I must mention the incident 2 years ago with the "Busan 9."

They were foreigners who volunteered in a play. They caught the angst of locals due to poking fun at Korean culture (and they poked fun at Western culture). The police and immigration detained them for something like "acting outside the E-2 visa parameters." In short, the Korean organizers charged a small fee to watch them, like 3,000 won a head, but this did not go to the foreigners and was simply to cover costs of the show, not for profit. Didn't matter, they were investigated for about a month before cleared of wrong doing, but they were being threatened with deportation. After that, immigration said in order to volunteer you should register here

http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/imm_04/imm_0404/sm9.jsp

and pay 60,000 won.

Since then, people have gotten clearance to volunteer verbally by calling immigration (1345). Others never get clearance and are ok.

Immigration is understaffed and I doubt you'll have any problems, but I want to put a bit of caution out before you do a public performance.

If anyone can clarify volunteering or the Busan 9 story, feel free.
