There are some numbers, statistics and statements that we just can't deal with, fathom or really offer a reply towards. They just numb us and freeze us and overwhelm.....

I"ve always been astounded by the fact that we humans kill millions of microorganisms with each breath. Life itself it seems is supported by death.

Some may know I'm fond of TED Talks. (use my player with new feeds http://eflclassroom.com/tedtalks.htm if you have some down time)

Chris Jordan, a visual artists, brings numbers to life in a very impassioned talk. Take a look, amazing stats and he argues for us to pay attention to these numbers that "numb" us.
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/chris_jordan_pictures_some_shocking_stats.html

Jonathan Harris is another genius when it comes to quantifying the unquantifiable...his work is incomparable. I highly recommend his We feel fine project. www.number27.org/

And of course there is Harper's Index. Here's Sept.

What numbers really rock you? .......

I forgot to mention.

Another great source of information and numbers is the Economist. I don't agree with their views all the time but I enjoy the quality of the writing and their irreverent style. You can get the Economist online by visiting my folder weekly. I usually upload it there every Mon.

I can see how it may be of interest to some of the regulars of this forum. Go away if you don't like the thread.

The first one rocks me... 2,540,000 people have registered on the website and I haven't even heard of her website and don't even know what she looks like?

The second one is almost as shocking. All of the foreclosed homes and available square footage in Miami and people are using a mall instead??

To measure is to know. - Lord Kelvin

Thanks for sharing DD. Really interesting.

I think Jordan's work is really effective and I really get his point about the way society doesn't really comprehend big numbers in any meaningful quantitative way ($700 Billion? $2 Trillion? What is that exactly?). Hearing about the 40 odd million paper cups that are thrown away per day doesn't convey the same degree of enourmity in the way that a picture, some 42 stories high and a few hundred feet across does. Is it powerful enough to change consumer habits though I wonder?

I also liked how he closed and didn't take the usual moral high-ground regarding "saving the planet" etc, but tactfully reminded the audience of our obligations to future generations.

Your much obliged BS.Dos.,

I also found his manner and in particular the ending of the speech as "thought provoking". Not the same trite stuff we get all the time but genuine and spirited.....

Here are some more amazing numbers and logical deduction....

Quote:
1. A total of 4000 cans are opened around the world every second
2. Ten babies are conceived around the world every second
3. Each time you open a can, you stand a 1 in 400 chance of becoming pregnant

PS. Van Islander - 0 puts me into much distress also! And to think we didn't even have the conception of this for millennia!

But it is self evident why you don't know about the site!

$2 Quadrillion

The total potential cost of the financial bailout to the U.S. taxpayer is already rapidly approaching $5 trillion, over seven times as much as the meaningless $700 billion bailout bill figure.

Analysts have previously marked out the $5 trillion figure as the actual cost, now those predictions are becoming demonstrably accurate.

Meanwhile, Hank Paulson has defended government intervention, stating Theres no doubt that the way to get the maximum bang for the taxpayers here was to invest in banks.

Based on this Reuters summary and the sources linked within the table, here is a breakdown of the bailouts cost to taxpayers so far.

Bailout Type - Cost To Taxpayers
Pelosis latest economic-stimulus package - $300 billion
Paulsons Bank Nationalization package - $250billion
Bailout to the American car companies - $25 billion
Nancy Pelosis bailout of the state and local governments - $150 billion
Financial bailout bill - $700 billion+
Bear Stearns financing - $29 billion
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac nationalization - $200 billion
AIG loan and nationalization - $85 billion (+ extra request of $35 billion)
Federal Housing Administration housing rescue bill - $300 billion
Mortgage community grants - $4 billion
JPMorgan Chase repayments - $87 billion
Loans to banks via Feds Term Auction Facility - $200 billion+
Loans from Depression-era Exchange Stabilization Fund - $50 billion
Purchases of mortgage securities by Fannie/Freddie - $144 billion
________________________________________________________
POSSIBLE TOTAL $2.56 trillion+

NUMBER OF HOUSEHOLDS PER U.S. CENSUS 105,480,101
POSSIBLE COST PER HOUSEHOLD $24,269

In addition, the U.S. government has said it will temporarily guarantee $1.5 trillion (856 billion) in new senior debt issued by banks, as well as insure $500 billion (285 billion) in deposits in non-interest accounts, mainly used by businesses.

These figures take the potential cost to $4.559 trillion+ - or $43,221 per household.

Furthermore, when you account for the fact that the credit default swap market is around $62 trillion, and that derivatives worldwide are worth between between $1 and $2 quadrillion, the numbers start to become meaningless.
