Can your hagwon all of a sudden tell its teachers that someone in charge of payroll and decutions made a mistake, and now the teacehrs must back pay taxes, since not enough taxes were taken fom your pay. Teachers at my school were told that they have to pay back between 400,000 and up. Some even 1,000,000. I understand we all have to pay taxes, but can they really force us to back pay because they made a mistake and didn't tax us enough? Sounds fishy to me.

Sounds like they got caught not paying taxes and/or pension and now they need to come up with the money quickly. Check you pay stubs and find out what deductions you have had.

I'm not sure about the exact percentages, but you can calculate your take-home salary this way:

Step 1: Deduct 4.5% for pension (annuity).
Step 2: Deduct about 2.5% for insurance.

Take the result you get from this calculation and compare it to what you've actually been receiving every month. If the amounts are about the same, then they are probably correct, they have not been deducting taxes. If they're not the same, proceed:

Step 3: Deduct about 3% for taxes.

If your actual pay is closer to this result, then they are probably BS-ing you.

You are aware that the tax payable on a salary of 2.2 million for 1 year is 479160 and drops to 153k in the 2nd year (only 70% of your income is taxable in year 2+ at the same employer).

pension contributions in year 1 are: w1,188,000
and in years 2+ they drop to: w810,000 per year based on a salary of 2.2 mil.

medical is 2.54% or 55880 per month based on a salary of 2.2 mil.

Sounds like either:
a) no-one was paying taxes (or anything else) and should be prepared for pension and medical to come looking as well

or

b) your employer was taking your deductions and putting them in his pocket and now expects you to pay again cause he got caught by the tax man (and again be prepared for the pension and medical plans to come looking too).

Pick one.

They are claiming that they didn't tax us on our overtime, and they were supposed to and didn't know it, so now we have to pay the tax back. Rolling Eyes I still smell a big rat. They alkso said tax for everyone went up, so in my 2nd year at this place, I am actually paying more tax than last year. I was always under the impression that the tax stated in your contract didn't budge. I guess the big man always finds a way to screw over the little people. Rolling Eyes

The tax percentage is posted on the national tax website as well as the calculator ( http://www.nts.go.kr ) (click the English link).

In your 2nd year the tax actually goes down because 30% of your income is tax exempt.

yup.... rat there....
