I didn't think this film would translate very well to North American audiences. I never actually made it all the way through the Korean version (hard to find time to just sit and watch a DVD) but from what I saw the movie seemed built around an Asian woman not being quiet and sweet and a limp Korean man who lets a woman bat him around. Well, welcome to the 1970s, Korea. May I introduce you to a TV show called Maude:

Seen both movies, and don't like either that much - the remake was horrid. The original has some Korean charm..
Thought it was strange that I saw the remake movie poster in the COEX movie theater, but it was being marked under a different name in Korea.. something like "New York Girl" or "New York Lover" |

I wonder if Jun Ji Yun got a cameo appearance in the new film as a New York street vendor. |

saw it... thank god only via pirated chinese mpegs because it would be a shame to waste any money on it...
Its like as if there were some caucasian people who were handed a Korean movie script and told to change all the words to English.... Imagine almost any Korean soap opera where there's like a crazy irrational hot woman and a stable calm guy and the face issue and gender roles and Korean family values... then imagine they took some of the characters from the original TV series, "Friends" and made them live out this Korean soap opera plot and that pretty much sums up the movie..
another one like that was "D war"...( i mean only insofar as it shows korean-ness being played out in a western setting )
Still, its kind of funny see; like viewing the ideals of the western world through the lens of a Korean unmarried woman. |

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. I've seen the original with Jeon Ji Hyun (mildly entertaining), but I won't be watching the Hollywood remake of it. |

Hmmm they should have worked "In the City" into that too. The way to pack in 30something single Korea women, release a movie with a perky blonde woman who finds love. Call it "Brad Pitt's New York Friends in the City". If you want to also bring in the cackling ajumma market, work "Cheaters" in there some how. |

They're going to remake every Korean movie until they find a winner. |

I watched the Korean version a long time ago. The only thing I can remember is the incredible loathing I felt for the moron guy who happily put up with the chick's irrational crap. It's an insult to suggest that anyone should put up with the kind of abusive behavior she portrayed. It's also an insult to suggest that her behavior was justified in any way. Maybe my selective memory is acting up, but this movie really pissed me off, at least what I can remember of it. |

Underwaterbob, you forget, that the main guy was very (VERY) average, while Jeon Ji-Hyun is absolutly stunning. |

Interesting. While it's easy to tell a female looker, it's not always easy to tell what Korean society judges as an attractive male.
I dunno, I can well imagine a lot of average guys letting a hottie walk all over them. How many "I'm a nice guy and women don't really like nice guys let me tell you a story about how a woman used me!" threads to you see pop up (if not here, on other message boards)? |
