If Palin acts fast, she can resign from the McCain/Palin ticket and appoint herself Senator, then maybe hang on to the job next Tuesday. |

No need to whinge. Fox not only has photos with "Guilty" in bold white embossed on them, but clicking on the photo (which is on the fox news main index page) or the link below takes you to the story at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,444257,00.html
Cnn just has a puny line at the top of "latest stories".

How long until Fox has a story about jury packing or some such thing? |

I'm a little shocked, I thought he'd either get aquitted or there was going to be a hung jury. So far I've been wrong about both. There is going to be an appeal on several different grounds I'm sure. That and they'll try to paint it as a witch hunt like they did the investigation into Palin's activities. |

Stevens won't resign and there isn't enough time for the Senate to remove him. My guess is if he loses the election he'll serve out the remainder of his term while his laywers appeal the case. If he gets reelected, then it could prove to be interesting. |

Someone had mentioned this in the other thread, rather then splitting the conversation, I'll point it out in this thread:

Legal experts note the judge has the discretion to give Stevens as little as no jail time and probation when he is sentenced. |
I can't envision Stevens getting anything other then probation and a fine at the very worst. At his age, it would be a risk to lock him up if he were to get seriously ill or be exposed to danger from another inmate. |

If incarcerated, he would go to a "country club" prison, probably with a private room and lock on the door.
He should get some jail time. Violating the public trust, not just of those in Alaska but of the entire country, has an enormous impact. It is part of what is rotting the public's faith in our elected representatives, including children.
On top of it, he doesn't even seem to realize he did anything wrong.
Any idiot in Alaska knows Bill Allen is corrupt, and has been at least since the 1980s. Stories about his attempts to buy influence with legislators have been in the Alaska press that long. See: Mike Szymanski and Ed Dankworth.
It is sad to see what has happened to Sen. Stevens. He was once a fine senator. But he has apparently become old, and at least a bit senile. Nevertheless, those around him, including his wife, should have had the sense to tell him to stay away from Bill Allen and his "gifts."
I wonder whether Alaska will take his name off the Ted Stevens International Airport? Never name something after a living politician, especially while still in office.
If Stevens were to get re-elected and then leave office, Palin could appoint someone to fill his remaining term. And if Gov. Murkowski could appoint his daughter to replace himself in the Senate when he became Governor, you betcha Palin could appoint ... her husband? |

New Jersey, Michigan and New York I believe are, because of the Italians, but not Alaska. |

That Alaskan independence movement crap pisses me off. We bought it fair and square from the then-broke-ass Russians.
If they wanna be independent they should go find their own patch of soil. If they still don't wanna get out, we should parachute the bastards onto Cuba or somewhere so at least they'll be out of our hair. |

Palin, McCain call on Stevens to resign
By Erika Bolstad
(10/28/08 13:02:55)
WASHINGTON -- Wasting no time in separating their campaign from the "corruption and insider dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation's capital," Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, called today on their fellow Republican, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, to step down from the Senate.
A jury in Washington on Monday convicted Stevens, 84, of failing to report thousands of dollars in freebies, including renovations that doubled the size of his home. Stevens has vowed to appeal the seven felony convictions and press on with his own re-election campaign in the week leading up to next Tuesday's election. He's only the fifth sitting senator to be convicted of such a serious crime.
"It is clear that Senator Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down," McCain said. "I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all."
Later in the day, Palin called on Stevens to step aside even if he is re-elected next week, when he faces Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat. Polls have been showing that race in a dead heat, although Stevens' indictment is so new to Alaskans there's almost no telling yet how voters will react on Election Day.
"After being found guilty on seven felony counts, I had hoped Senator Stevens would take the opportunity to do the statesman-like thing and erase the cloud that is covering his Senate seat," Palin said in a statement. "He has not done so. Alaskans are grateful for his decades of public service but the time has come for him to step aside."
It's a move away from her first statement hours after Monday's verdict, when Palin released a statement calling Stevens' conviction "a sad day" for Alaska but stopped short of demanding that he step down.
The McCain-Palin ticket's call for her ouster joins a growing call for the Alaska Republican to step down, including Republican senators Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Norm Coleman of Minnesota, who faces a competitive race himself against comedian Al Franken.... |

Sad. Even Stevens' lawyer should tell him to show some sort of remorse. The judge is not going to be amused. If he's healthy enough to campaign, and to serve another six years in Congress, the judge may conclude he's healthy enough to serve six years in jail.
No one could have made this script up. What a strange campaign. |

Me too. I don't know why it didn't get more attention. Maybe they were saving it for if/when the GOP went after Michelle Obama...? |

Yepp, them Alaska Independence Party members are REAL Americans. They LOVE their country.
So, does that mean that Todd Palin wouldn't be able to get a security clearance?
Uncle Ted, time to retire, to say the least. You aren't welcome in the Senate, anymore:

McConnell calls on Stevens to resign
By: Martin Kady II and John Bresnahan
October 28, 2008 11:01 PM EST
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is calling on Ted Stevens to resign from the Senate and warning that the longest-serving Republican senator in history will face certain expulsion if he doesnt leave on his own first.
McConnell, locked in a tough reelection fight in Kentucky, did not call for Stevens resignation in his initial statement on the Alaskans conviction on seven federal felonies Monday.
But Republican Sens. John McCain, Norm Coleman, Jim DeMint, John Sununu and Gordon Smith and Democrat Barack Obama all called on Stevens to resign Tuesday.
And by the time a reporter from the Lexington Herald-Leader put the question to him at a campaign stop Elizabethtown, Ky., Tuesday night, McConnell was ready to say that Stevens must go, too.
"I think he should resign immediately," McConnell said. "If he did not do that ... there is a 100 percent certainty that he would be expelled from the Senate..... |
