Someone in my office just said an unfinished department store collapsed in Gangnam and a couple people died. I said that it's better that it happened now rather than later.

Was anyone here in 95 when that other department store collapsed with 1500 people inside?

I know that building well.

Nasan Homeplace closed in 1999 and has been derelict since then. Here's a picture of it as of May this year.

Here's a picture of what it looked like, ahem, inside.

Judging by the news photos, they were demolishing it from the top down, when someone did something careless that weakened the lower floors and it collapsed.

I was here then. Remember it well, I had a class in the apartments right next to where it was. Had to walk past the mourning families that were gathered in the parking lot that week. Sad time............

I've watched Koreans and their construction methods and I wouldn't want to put my eggs in their basket. There is almost zero oversight by inspectors and their attention to detail is amazingly lacking. From pouring concrete in the rain to uneven steps in the stairwell, it's no suprise to me that something like this could happen.

My wife was down the street from Sampoong when it collapsed. A large number of her schoolmates died in that disaster.

It really looks like Nasan was under demolition. The rooftop doesn't look like it did when I was up there. In some pictures, you can see an excavator, which is a common demolition technique in Korea when there are too many other buildings around.

Here's another shot of that in action, this one next to the Hangook Ilbo downtown.

According to notes I made several months ago, the owner corporation went bankrupt. It was closed in December 1999, and keeping in mind this is Gangnam, one of the more expensive parts of the city, that's some expensive real estate that nothing's being done with for a long time.

There are many, many incomplete construction projects in this country. Got any pictures about it or any websites at all?

And are you sure it's spelt Megatro?

I was here in 95 when the department store crashed. I remember them pulling out people that were still alive a couple weeks after the accident.

Do you remember the girl that survived the collapse? She was on national TV and when she woke up in the hospital, the first thing she asked for was a coke. Coca-cola wanted her to do it in a commercial, but she never did it.

Most of the the department stores that were never completed are there because the developers went bankrupt during the Asian Financial Crisis.
