I'm looking to buy a big TV, and I am somewhat confused by all the techno speak and hype. Why are some of the larger TVs cheaper than some of the smaller ones?
What is the difference between HD and Full HD? Are all channels, DVD's, downloads, etc., nowadays HD? Is plasma really that much better than LCD?
Which brand is best? |

A few quick guesses for you:
HD is probably 720p and Full HD is probably 1080p. The numbers refer to the resolution, which means the 1080p picture is 50% more detailed.
If you're getting something 32" or less you can probably go 720 without noticing too much difference but I'd definitely go for one that does 1080p if you're going above 40".
Plasma has better blacks but can experience burn in, and the early models had a very short lifetime. Not sure if it's really an issue anymore. LCDs are slowly overtaking them. I'd probably go LCD if it was me.
Samsung is a good value in the states but will probably be overpriced here. Xcanvas seemed to have good picture for the price last time I was looking. May or may not be a good bet, don't know. |

| 1080 dpi? bah... go 1200 on a 24" LG Flatron computer screen and watch your DVDs on that. best of the lot in terms of quality and you don't watch cable Korean t.v. anyways right. The 'net has all the shows you could want. |

1080p resolution does not mean that it is 1080dpi...
1080p (progressive scan) has a max resolution of 1920x1080 and is full HD, operating at 120mhz.
720p has a max resolution of 1368x768 and is not full HD, operating at 60mhz.
I just bought a tv myself over Chuseok. I got a Samsung PAVV 32" 720p and its great. Didnt need anything larger for my small apt. Hook it up to my laptop with the d-sub video and standard audio and watching d/l content (movies, tv shows, etc) is fantastic. I didnt need a full HD 1080p tv as I have no other home theater equipment and dont really see myself getting a full home theater in the near future.
As for different brands, best bet is to go to somewhere like HiMart where they carry several different brands and have a look at what you like. I had done a bit of research online, and was looking at either the Samsung or an LG Xcanvas. When I went to HiMart, they had the two exact models I had been researching side by side, playing the same movie. IMO, the Samsung panel was way nicer, and actually a bit cheaper too. |

Well, there's a good point.
Which sources will actually feed your expensive, hard-worked for, 1080p TV a Full HD signal?
Blu-ray players for sure.
Broadcast TV? I doubt it. When it says HD in the corner of screen on KBS....is that 1080p?
x264/MKV files from a PC or HDD device? I dunno.
I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of people, who have forked over a huge chunk for Full HD 1080p, have never actually seen it play 1080p content. |

I download 1080p movies and some of the TV content might be 1080p as the pictures are quite impressive. Sometime the clarity and color messes w/ my eyes cause it's so vivid. But I think, more likely than not, most of the TV HD content is 720p. I mainly got mine for my gaming consoles which can use 1080p resolution in many newer games. And, of cours my PS3 plays blu ray at 1080p. Mix that w/ a good 5.1 surround system and it makes gaming much nicer.
Anyhow, the near future will see more 1080p content available and resell price will be good. That's if I ever decide to sell. And, it wasn't that much more for full hd compatibility. |

Resell price will never be good. There will always be something better round the corner.
OP: The best thing is to do your homework first. Spend an afternoon with google and just read some links. Then go to Himart and see if you can tell the difference between 720 and 1020. Bring a blueray along with you and get them to play it. Make sure that you are sitting at your normal viewing distance.
The other thing, as mentioned before is screen size. Depending on view distance and screen size, the difference between one resolution and another becomes pretty marginal as your eyes can't resolve the extra pixels anyway. |
