...and they don't even teach alone." said by my Principal to my husband.
She's such a classy gal.
And she called my co-teacher stupid.
Some of the reasons why I didn't qualify for an increase in wage.
But could he please make me understand because she knows I'm a good teacher and she wants me to stay.
There is someone else at this school that I would label 'stupid' and it's not my co-teacher. |

Most FTs' are paid for by the government and not the school. It shouldn't cost them a dime.
Hard to negotiate a raise most the time though I'd imagine. You're not under EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE are you? |

The schools get up to 160,000,000 won per foreign teacher from the federal government. Plus, schools with foreign teachers have increased enrollment which means even more money coming into the school.
You are a valuable financial asset. |

You're kidding me? I thought it was about 50,000,000 a year budget for each foreign teacher. 160,000,000? Of course to be valued, liked, and wanted, you have to bringing some sort of value into your work place, but I didn't think it was all about this much money though I know in a hagwon I'm worth about 250,000,000 a year and they treated me like shite compared to a PS.
What in the world do they do with all that dosh? Do the 2 guys wearing suits in the office get huge bonuses? I'd like some purchase an English program, that is books and materials. I'd like to set up an English zone classroom that all the students visit for my classes. The classroom would have all the things a standard classroom has, but also an English library and English books as well as things from the west. With that much money, I could build a classroom building on campus if a room is not available. Of course, I didn't come here to tell the Koreans how they should manage things. |

Up to 100,000,000 won has been added this year by the Korean government for "renovation for English language classrooms." Naturally, whatever the schools choose to do with that money is up to them. |

Is that for all public schools in Korea or just some districts? Is there a website or something that backs this up? I'd love to be able to print something out to show my school... |

I don't think all schools got those.
My school was picked as one out of a few that will get money for the renovatied English classrooms. The district supervisors and education officials went to each "candidate" school to choose.
I have no idea why my school was chosen considering students are dropping like flies.
Elementary school, grades 1-6. 17 classes TOTAL.
Grade 6: 3 classes
Grade 5: 3 classes
Grade 4: 3 classes
Grade 3: 3 classes
Grade 2: 3 classes
Grade 1: 2 classes
For 2009 the school is getting even smaller with having 15 classes total. If I choose to stay, I would only teach 15 hours a week, and that's seeing grade 3,4,5,6 for every English class. Of course, this is Korea and no one is allowed free time. For the extra 7 classes a week, the administration wants me to:
1. English Club
2. English Drama
3. English Club 2
4. Teaching Teachers.
5. English Supplement (for the kids that are waaay behind in each grade)
6. Miscellaneous (they said I might have to teach another subject)
Anyways, I still have no idea why my school got chosen for a renovated English classroom when its hemorrhaging students left and right. The main reason the students are leaving is because the neighborhood is poor and residences are being bought up by businesses and turned into restaurants/bars/hof places. |

Meh.Whatever money the government gives to the school, or puts into the school, doesn't really correlate with your salary. Plus foreign English public school teachers are hardly worth getting paid too much. Unless they're utilized practically. Classes of close to 30 or more, once or twice a week, is not very useful. Paying teachers a substantial amount for extra, smaller classes, like in an after school program? Yeah. |

This strikes me as cultural more than anything else. Get kids who aren't used to seeing/interacting with 'foreigners' some face time with whitey/African Americaney/Indianey/Latinoey etc |

In my area, any school that wants to make an english "lab" gets 80 million won to do as they please. But out of some 30 schools only 8, or so, decided to take the money. |

In our area, each school submitted a proposal on how they would spend that money. Last year, another school got the money. This year, I don't know who gets it cause it hasn't been decided yet. |

English class makeovers are so far only skin deep
July 18, 2008
A rainbow-colored sign reading English Village hangs over the entrance to an English-only classroom, welcoming elementary school students. A world atlas hangs on the wall, and colorful animals with their names spelled out are painted on a corridor display board. This particular classroom opened in May and cost 50 million won ($48,053) to refurbish.
Despite the 60-inch flat screen television and travel-themed design, a fifth grader with the family name Kim is not too impressed.
Its nice that the classroom is now bright and clean, but none of the class materials had changed, he said.
At another English-only classroom that opened last month, 30 middle school students are engaged in a vocabulary game with their instructor. The teenagers, divided into teams, yell, Here! We got the answer! as they hold up answer cards.
Blinds printed with a large photo of a double-decker bus on the streets of New York hang in the place of the usual curtains.
We study English three times a week, but we always have one class here, said a student with the family name Kwon. We have been playing this vocabulary game before the classroom was redecorated.
Although this school spent 50 million won remodeling two classrooms, there is still little difference in the quality of instruction.
The Lee Myung-bak administration is splurging 100 billion won ($96 million) on creating such classrooms with the purpose of establishing an English-friendly educational environment across the country. However, there is criticism the budget is only being used to change the decor, rather than to reform the curriculum.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology gave 16 district education offices each 73 billion won to fund such English class projects. Some offices are planning to use their own budgets for curriculum development.
The Gyeonggi Office of Education has already planned for 198 English-only classrooms, costing 100 million won each. Seoul will have 278 installed by the end of the year, at 50 million won apiece.
However, this budget of 50 million won per school is being handed out by district education offices indiscriminately, regardless of a schools size or situation.
Despite the ample budget, software is insufficient. Besides a selection of teaching materials including books, DVDs and dictionaries, there is no standard English education system.
Although the facilities are pleasant and encourage student motivation, there is an urgent need for a program to utilize these benefits, said a female English teacher who only gave the name Park.
There may be problems because this is a pilot project, but a new class agenda and budget distribution plan will be developed for gradual reform, said a Seoul Office of Education representative.
Despite this internal deficiency, however, the project is a financial jackpot for the interior design companies remodeling the classrooms. Last year our sales were 1 billion; this year they have increased to 10 billion won. We are getting inquiries from all over the country, said one company representative.
