Festival Highlights NK Life Style

By Kim Sue-young
Staff Reporter

A local cultural festival began Thursday for South Koreans to take a glance at North Korean life.

The annual fair hosted by the Education Center for Unification under the Ministry of Unification aims at helping people, especially teenagers, learn about North Korea and its culture for future unification of the Korean Peninsula.

About 3,000 citizens and students from 34 elementary, middle and high schools joined the festival.

Unification Minister Kim Ha-joong expressed the hope that the fourth event would help South Koreans learn about the communist state and ponder the meaning of unification.

The center prepared a range of programs to teach more about the reclusive state.

Several North Korean soap operas and animations were shown, and drawings were displayed in which North Korean young defectors depicted their life in the North and experiences undergone while escaping from the state.

It also prepared North Korean foods such as corn porridge and barley cake.

Participants could have their photo taken wearing a North Korean soldier's uniform or in North Korean student's attire.

Several professors at the center also gave a lecture on Seoul government's North Korea policy dubbed ``Policy of Mutual Benefit and Common Prosperity.''

It calls for helping to boost North Korea's per capita national income to $3,000 within a decade in return for Pyongyang's decision to verifiably give up its nuclear ambitions.

The occasion will run through Friday. For more information, call (02) 901-7051 or 7083.

Yeah, they never cease to amaze me.

Who else in the world would do this with a country they are at war with?

Just look at any pics of starving people and that should be a good approximation of what NK's lifestyle is like.
