Police Target Brothels in Gangnam

Police are cracking down on large-scale, corporate-like brothels thriving in southern Seoul.
Gangnam Police Station said Tuesday it has detained more than 120 pimps, prostitutes and customers after raids on 18 brothels over the last month.
``It's the tip of the iceberg,'' a Gangnam police officer said. ``We will pursue them until brothels in our precinct disappear completely.''
Police have been under fire for being lenient on large-scale brothels in Gangnam, believed to have maintained close ties with law enforcement officers, while they are harsh toward smaller brothel operators in other areas.
In response, police Thursday launched a large-scale investigation into what they call ``corporate-level brothels,'' rounding up 16 sex workers and customers.
According to investigators, a ``luxury brothel'' in Samseong-dong they raided made full use of a 10-story building, hiring more than 200 employees, including about 100 prostitutes.
``It was open exclusively to membership holders to avoid traps set by police,'' an investigator said. ``In addition, it served only alcohol and other `sound' services to customers whose background have not yet been identified. Prostitution was offered exclusively to familiar visitors in secret rooms.''
Police will summon building owners and bar staff for questioning. ``We will seek arrest warrants for those deemed necessary,'' the officer said.
Meanwhile, a group of sex workers hosted a press conference in central Seoul, Monday, on behalf of an estimated 2,500 prostitutes nationwide to call on the government to abolish what they call a ``too rigorous'' anti-prostitution law.
``Due to the police crackdown, we were unable to make money over the past month,'' a prostitute said hiding half of her face behind a mask. ``What we want from the government is not subsidies or any support but their recognition of us as a legal labor engaging in the prostitution industry,''
The Ministry of Gender Equality awards former prostitutes 400,000 won ($310) in monthly subsidies. ``It's too small to live on. So many former prostitutes are tempted to return to their prior workplaces'' she added.

And the minimum wage is going up to 4000 won per hour in January (bout double what they get from MGE). 32k per day for a starting wage at e-mart.

I can't understand how any woman can endure an adjoshi on top of them butt naked smelling like soju for 10 mins at a time. No matter what the amount, those women can't truly ever be happy with their lives. |

i4NI,
Agreed,
I can't understand how any woman can endure an ajjoshi of top of them butt naked smelling like Soju, reeking of sam-gyeop-sal, decorated with snot and shim ramyeon, piggy sausage fingers covered in warts and kimchi, ingrown toe nails and a little bit of yesterday's puke in the corner of the mouth, stiff ear wax rolling out the ears accompanied by some demonic harking and yelping. And come one, we all know they can't last for 10 minutes!
I can't imagine any worse form of physical and mental torture than being violated by an ajosshi. Oh wait, perhaps looking into the face of Socks and Yesterday would be an even greater punishment?! |

They may not enjoy the sex, but a) your description, while amusing, is ridiculous, and b) it may be worth it for them considering the income (if they're not captives, it's a high income).
Regardless, it shouldn't be the government's role to regulate morality, and provided both parties (the client and the "service provider") are participating on a voluntary basis, it should be legal (sexual slavery should be stopped, of course). |

Well, on the Seoul Podcast a month ago, I said that I wouldn't believe they were serious about the crackdown until they started going after the room salons in Kangnam.
Hmmm..... time will tell. |

A couple of months ago, I read about a massage shop owner who was distraught about the police repeatedly busting his business over and over again. It's sad that a pimp can't make an honest living anymore.
And who are we, as English teachers, to judge or look down on the ladies? They make several times the amount of money we earn.
Look at it this way. Would you rather
A) be with screaming kids all day long trying to teach them English for 2,500,000 a month?
or
B) be with drunk adjummas all night long giving them a good time for 2,500,000 a night?
It's hard to blame the ladies for doing the work they do. |

I've met a few girls that work at room salons.
During the day, they date rich men that buy them food, presents, and clothes. At night they work at the room salons.
Do they feel bad? Not really.
Its like this: some of these girls that work at room salons want to live a VERY luxurious lifestyle. They want $5000 Chanel purses and $1000 Fendi wallets.
There aren't too many men around that's willing to spend that kind of loot on their girl friends, so they work at the room salons so they can buy everything their materialistic/greedy hands want.
If you are too old or too ugly to work in these "Corporate" room salons, then you go to smaller places, or to dabangs.
Don't know what a room salon is? You see them on the street all the time. Some of them have fancy names, others just say "Business Club".
I walk by a ton of them at night since I live in Yeoksam.
The super hot ones do the room salon thing for like 5 years, save up a shload of money and move to a new city and start a new life. |
