I would like to buy a new desktop computer either from a store or from a website in Korea. I think the website would be cheaper but I can't read Korean that well to see if there are any loopholes/oversights (like it was reconditioned/refurbished) and I wouldn't be to confident contacting the website if I needed to get it fixed.
I would like something for gaming. Between 1-2 GB RAM. And a decent video card.
Where should I go and how much will it cost?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I bought a computer at the Yongsan electronic market a few months ago ~
not high end, but it's not low end either
the whole thing, including monitor, cost me about $500 / 500,000 won
I bought the monitor (19 inch lcd) used for about 150
cant remember the exact system spec, but it's good for gaming
did not come with Windows, have to install that yourself
if you are thinking about the Yongsan electronic market, I suggest the bigger store, my opinion is that they're a bit more reliable
I got mine at the bigger store inside the building ~
you sit down with one of the salesperson and specify what you want
there are package deal as well -
salesperson take your order, you pay your money, give them your phone number and wait about an hour and a half - they'll call/msg you on your phone to come and take your computer
I suggest bringing one of those little trolley thing ... I didnt have fun lugging that thing back to my place >.< |

I personally like J-tech over in the Seon-in plaza (it's the place with the big gigabyte sign on it).

You'll find that you will save between 10-30% by walking over to the other side of the railroad tracks from Yongsan station (there is an overhead pedway across the rail yard) even if you choose one of the other shops.

(sign above the J-tech shop - prices were from June).
You can get into a OK quad core system with a decent video card for about 500k won (not including monitor).
They are great for repairs / replacements too.
I had a 750GB HDD go south on me. I walked into the shop and they replaced it (warranty) with a new one off the shelf in a matter of a few minutes (and I didn't have the receipt with me - but they do know me).

I wonder how the Dell's are pricing, given the exchange rate? |

I went to Yongsan today. Around Yongsan, they want around 700,000 for a Intel Dual Core computer with 4gb Ram, 350GB hard drive, and a GeForce 9500 video card. Knock off 40,000 won if I only want 2GB RAM. Plus 180,000 for a 20inch wide LCD. So I'd be looking at around 840,000 to 880,000. Across the pedway, they want around 850,000 also.
Both computers come with Windows XP and 1 year After Service.
I found J Tech around 8 PM but it turns out they close around 7.30. Another shop in that building wanted around 870,000 for those specs.
www.icoda.co.kr wants around 700,000 for those specs but windows XP would cost 140,000 = 840,000.
I don't think I'm shopping for a top end system. The only thing I'm really upgrading from a basic system is the RAM from 1GB to 4 GB. Which should only cost an additional 50,000 won.
Can I get a system of those specs for 600,000? |

I bought my desktop at J-Tech for 640k won not including monitor. I got Quad Core Pentium, 2GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, GeForce 8600GT, and a legit copy of XP in English. This was about 4 months ago, and I have been very satisfied with this machine. I don't game but use my PC for watching HDTV / movies and it plays 1080p movies with no problems.
Last year I bought a much lesser desktop(80 GB HDD, AMD processor, 512 MB RAM,, etc) +17" monitor in the shopping mall next to Yongsan station for nearly the same price, but it crapped out on me a few months later. So the moral here: go to J-Tech and not the shopping mall next to the station! |
