Has anyone heard of students at a regular Korean high school missing a semester of school to study overseas and then resuming their studies in Korea? Is it possible for them to get credit for what they've done in another country and then complete their high school studies, getting full credit? |

I know but these seem to be more for middle or elementary students or students at FLHSs. I'm wondering if students in regular programmes can, as I'm not sure I've come across a case of it. |

Not exactly related but...
I was at school in South Africa with a Korean guy. In std 9 (equivelant of korean 2nd grade high school) he left SA and went back to Korea. He finished his last 2 years in a Korean high school and went on to a korean uni.
He was only at school in South Africa for 2 years. |

I am pretty sure that it is possible. We have sent some of our students to study in Canada for a year. I am not sure about the possibility of doing 1 semester only.
We send our students to Delta, British Columbia. The student would have to pay for going to the school, as it is not free for non-residents.
I know to be part of the program we offer, which is a one year program, it costs close to 50,000,000 won per year. That includes housing with a family, food from the family (they get a stipend) plane tickets, help with visa issues, and extra-curricular events.
I think going to the US would be a lot more difficult, as getting a simple Travel visa is a daunting task. Although, I hear that might change within the next year or so. |

Yes,
Korea sends more exchange students to the US than any other country (to the US), as far as I remember.
As I understand it, the Korean education system means that students don't earn credits to graduate the way we do in the US.
There are a number of high school exchange organizations all over the world- I studied with YFU in my junior year and worked for them later.
I just hope that they come back having learned something!
Good for them- although I hope the students are as into it as their parents. |
