Greedy British academic meets more-money-than-brains American businessman.

Dr. Peter Millican -- a distinguished philosophy professor at Hertford College in Oxford, England -- was offered the money by Robert Fox, a California businessman and brother-in-law of Republican congressman Chris Cannon, the paper reported Sunday.

Fairly lucrative encounter for the academic, I'd say. If someone offered me that kind of money to prove that Mount Rushmore was designed by the guy who drew Woody Woodpecker, I'd happily take the cash and deliver the most credible results. |

But then you would need to add "for hire" to your "distinguished professor from Oxford" credentials, On the Other Hand. |

I'd say our more-money-than-brains American businessman was not very patriotic...Going all the way to Oxford when the US is full of good institutions of higher learning. I suppose I should be happy he didn't hire someone from Oral Roberts or Bob Jones University.
I wonder if his brother-in-law is one of those anti-American congressmen Michele Bachmann was so worked up about. |

He probably wanted to proclaim "Look what this detached and sharp fellow at Oxford has to say about the Obama-Ayers link..." |

Actually, the businessman backed out after the academic told him any results would have to be made public. |

I am not completely up on my academic codes of ethics. Is it entirely unheard of for a professor to do outside consulting work? |

No. I had professors act as expert witnesses in trials. They made obscene amounts of money - in the neighborhood of $10,000 per day. |

No doubt. Phillip Morris defense, right?
The question is not whether people do it; the question is whether departments and informal social rules look down on that, and if so, how hard? |

How's this for the irony of ironies:
In his political memoir, Obama calls attention to JFK's Profile in Courage on two separate occasions. After its publication we come to find out from Ted Sorenson on his death bed that he did indeed write most of it.
That said, in reading Obama's tract, the writing style is very similar to the cadence of his speeches. I think he put forth an honest effort. |
