Can anyone chime in on flying on one of these low cost airlines? How about United, American, or U.S.?

I found Delta to be the cheapest for the dates I want to fly, but I'm wondering if I should spend a little more money. I have very little experience flying internationally.

Just me talking here, but Delta is my favorite. I've consistently had better experiences with Delta than any other US airline. When I was younger I few Cathay Pacific (don't know if they're still in business) and had a wonderful experience with them, and I really enjoyed Lufthansa and Air France. Just my two cents.

You might check Singapore Airlines (not an American company obviously!). The are low cost (compared to most US carriers), but they offer extra legroom and first class service...in economy class:

Delta and Northwest are in the process of merging. I flew Northwest for most international flights over the years as they often offer the best fares. This year was different as Asiana was offering the best fares between the US and NE Asia. So much for building one miles account large enough to get a free trip.

depends how cheap or how much money you want to save.

first couple of times i flew home i took the cheaper US carriers but then realized that paying a couple hundred dollars more for a flight via Singapore or Korean Air was well worth the extra cost...better service, free drinks, better entertainment.

i even had one flight on a US carrier where two hours before landing, they ran out of coffee!! just what you want when you need a pick me up!!

I get miles with Star Alliance so I flew Asiana here, which was very nice. I've flown USAir to Europe before, and I don't really recommend it. They lost my bags twice (there and back), and I never recovered one (although that might've been the fault of Alitalia). If you want a cheap flight and they offer the best price, then as a cheap flight it's ok. But if you want something a little more comfortable with better service and better food, look into Singapore, Korean Air, Asiana, or anything anyone else has mentioned.

I've only flown Delta domestically in the US and it's been fine, no problems, no complaints.

If using delta to fly from the US to Asia, or Asia to the US .. you get to fly Korean Air! That's the only reason why I fly with them, even US domestic, so collect my miles. I like Singapore Air too.

Otherwise, in the states it's either Delta or US Airways that is the cheapest. Southwest if you're flying from and to their hubs.

I flew to Japan on Northwest three years ago and I must say never again..

If you don't have status with any of the airlines, I would recommend choosing the cheapest flight. Airlines in the U.S. are all basically equally bad. If you collect miles with a certain program and it's only $50 or $100 or more, you can weigh whether those miles are worth the extra cost.

Sometimes, a ticket might be with Delta but the flight will be a codeshare with Korean Airlines. In that case, I'd definitely take the flight on Korean Airlines. Even in Economy, you'll get a much better experience from Korean Air.

Another airline where Economy could be different is United. They have their Economy Plus section with an extra 3 to 5 inches of legroom that actually makes a big difference. If you don't have elite status, you'll have to pay extra for this and it will cost a few hundred dollars extra.

If you tend to fly more than 25,000 miles a year, I would try to stick with one alliance. For example, Sky Team includes Korean Airlines, Delta, Northwest, Continental, etc. You can fly any of those carriers and credit miles to one frequent flier program. If you get elite status, it can give you things like priority check-in, priority baggage, priority boarding, lounge access, bonus miles, higher priority for operational upgrades and if you fly enough, they often give actual upgrade instruments. On United, you'll get Economy Plus access for free. These days, airlines in the U.S. are adding fees for everything but in most cases, they waive them for elite customers.

Delta's fine, I've never flown Continental. Delta's much better than Northwest, which is what concerns me about the merger. Who knows, it may make NW better. United an American are also decent.

All freaking Airlines are the same. Coach is coach. Business Class is Business Class. That's where the difference lays.

^ I disagree.

Fly Air India long-haul and then take a Virgin flight and then tell me that they're all the same.

Yeah fly Northwest and then most any other and you'll see they are not all the same! To make it real easy, fly NW and then Korea Air or Thai Airways. No contest.
