Listening to Obama's victory speech and he makes good mention of Lincoln.

I remember Bill Clinton's first inaugural speech. Lincoln was also quoted and refered to.

Question:

Why do Democrat presidents seem so fond of the founder of the Republican party?

I even remember Bob Dole debating Bill Clinton prior to C's second election when Dole seemed almost out of desperation to say 'hey ... I represent the party of Lincoln.'

That aside, Obama does seem a bit more humble so far than what I can remember from Clinton's first election ... only Hillary seems to be lashing out with partisan fireballs. It's not going to help when Republicans still have some fillibuster power. Obama does seem smarter.

Lincoln belongs to all of us. Why do Republicans so often quote Thomas Jefferson, the founder of the Democratic Party?

When Lincoln was the leader of the Republican Party, it was the progressive party, in favor of using government to address problems: the transcontinental railroad (yes, connecting the West Coast to the rest of the country was a problem), establishing the land-grant university system (making education readily available to as many as possible) and unloading the vast amount of public land at rock bottom prices (the Homestead Act) in such a way that it empowered the poor. It was the party that envisioned us as one people, not a collection of states (states rights).
