Koreans showed a lot of support for Obama, so does that also translate into families being more open if their son or daughter wants to date a Black person? Assuming of course that they're cool with their offspring dating non-Koreans. |

I'm not sure I'd make that assumption. I believe the Koreans still have a long way to go when it comes to combating racism. |

It would just seem, in my opinion, that it would change mindsets in a little way. |

Koreans for the most part aren't cool with the whole non-Korean dating a Korean thing. There are exceptions of course, but I don't think they are anywhere near ready to be more accepting just because of Obama's influence.
Hell, my CTs didn't even know that he is from a mixed marriage. They thought he was from Kenya.

Hell, at least they know Kenya exists. I had all my coworkers in the US telling me he was an Arab. |

Well, I'm sure quite a few Koreans could acknowledge the admirable qualities of Martin Luther King but his long 'presence' as an inspiring figure hasn't done much so why would Obama?
Also, Afro-America hip-hop artists have been popular here for some time, but has that translated into a greater acceptability of interracial dating?
Alternatively, one can't help but ask why many Koreans supported Obama. From some recent newspaper articles I've seen there seems to be some implicit, sometimes explict, hope that the electing of Obama is merely one step closer to the possibility of a Korean-American president and this they find particularly titilating |

Koreans just want to love the USA again, not just our clothes and food. |

Harvard law grad, law professor, politician...yeah, he'd probably do. Anyone with those qualifications would. Prejudice is funny that way. |

Not sure if you guys have noticed, but this isn't a multi-ethnic society. The US is and there's still racism. I think it's more accurate to compare Korea to other mono-ethnic societies rather than America in regards to racism. Not excusing it, but you have to admit the definitions and expecations of the society are pretty different. |

I fixed it to make it even better
Back on topic, I think Obama will change the world's perspective of 'black guys' (forgetting that he's half white). Currently, most of Korea's exposure to African Americans has been via hip hop and the like, and let's be honest, would YOU want YOUR daughter dating 50cent?
I'd wager any Korean family open to the idea of their daughter dating a non-korean, would look at the person in question. If he presented himself like Obama I doubt there'd be few problems, if he came across as the kind of guy whose 'gonna bust a cap on yo ass' (like a lot of the Military guys do...with the Hip Hop look) different story. |
