|
|
I passed Level 2! Woot! We also just had our graduation ceremony today. At lunch afterwards, our speaking teacher mentioned that the textbooks are being revised (or rewritten?) for Levels 1 and 2. (She took part in the revision/rewriting of the Level 2 textbook.) Anyone else heard about this? Any details? How about level 3 (although I won't be able to take it until next summer)?
I wonder why they are doing this when textbooks for Level 6 (and 7, for that matter) haven't been published yet. Those of you who took Levels 6 & 7, just out of curiosity, did you use textbooks at all, and if so, we they published "in-house", like the books for my writing class?

Just curious, how do you like Sogang? And what countries are most of the students from?
Just curious because I go to SNU. |

When I studied there, we used new text books for level 4.
The level 5 book was completed, but the version we used wasn't the glossy, color photo version that I assume they use now. My teacher said the content was the same, but the new version hadn't been published yet.
The level 6 book was crap, imho. All it consisted of was reading material. There was no explanation of grammar at all. I'm assuming that the final published version will quite different from what we used. |

I like Sogang quite a lot. Out of the four language skills speaking is stressed. I've always felt that speaking was my worst area, so that was a huge factor in choosing Sogang.

That's why I liked it, too. Once you get into level 4, they start to focus on listening a lot as well, which can be just as beneficial. |

I was at Sogang yesterday and they had sample books for the new semester and they are far more colourful and more pictures than before, they actually had 3 books, student book and work book as well as another smaller book that was full of grammar tips n stuff like that, it looks far more user friendly and fun than the ones in the past just from sight not from studying.... |

At the lower levels there is a good mix of Europeans, Westerners and Asians. I studied with people from India, Bangladesh, Poland, Japan, China, Thailand, England, Canada and the States and I'm sure a few others that I've since forgotten. At the higher levels (5,6) it was mostly Chinese and Japanese. I was one of only 2 westerners in my class. That's not exactly true. There was also a gyopo who lived in Korea until she was in the second grade. She was already fluent, so I don't really count her. (I also really resented her being in the class) |

Does anyone know whether the level 6 books are available for purchase at Sogang? (When I was a student there last year students could buy books from any level there, rather than in bookstores, for a reduced rate). I would assume that level 6 is not out in bookstores yet, but would like to buy it if it's available elsewhere. |

They're nice books. More color, more variety, a good move away from ethnocentricism while still going over culture points. Pretty good cohesion in chapters, the in-class stuff is good, and the supplementary stuff goes well with it.
In theory.
Ask for another update after people have actually used the books. |

yeongil: CrikeyKorea confirmed what I heard, and that was in these new books there are three instead of two; the grammar explanations are moved from the student book to the little grammar book. There are already separate little books for grammar (and vocabulary?) in Levels 4 and 5, I think. I think one of my teachers said that there are new books for level 3, but I'm not sure. Beaver or CrikeyKorea, can either of you confirm?
taobenli: Before knowing that they were coming out with these new books, I got the books for level 3 at Sogang directly, before finishing level 2, to preview (it'll be a year before I can take level 3). Included was the writing book, which hasn't been published (in fact none of the writing books have been published).
Speaking of the writing books, back to Beaver or CrikeyKorea, do these new books include new writing books?

There is a new level 3 book and it's either just begun being printed or just about to be.
No separate writing books as far as I know, but it's a good idea. |

BlaisePascal-
How's it going? Back in Korea, and Sogang still treating you well? I've been in Korea for some research this summer, but not in Seoul... |
