Has anyone noticed the increase in the number of jobs advertised on this and other sites, lately? Also, jobs in Japan and other places, too...

I think alot of ESL teachers are getting sucked away to China and they just need to advertise more to fill the positions?...

Or, are the Koreans finding more need to learn English lately?

yeah, i was thinking i should have explained my question better...

is the increase due to a reduction in supply of English teachers? I guess the exchange rate would fit into that one. So would jobs in China. So would a hyothetical situation in which it was learned that many English teachers are routinely given poisoned kimchi at work....

Or, is the increase due to an increase in demand? Koreans do more international business, now, and believe that English is more important than ever. Korea has become more wealthy recently and they have extra money to spend on English lessons, etc.

As far as the exchange rate specifically goes, I noticed the exchange rate for Japan actualy saw the yen increase quite a bit on the dollar... yet, there still seem to be more jobs being advertised there. My money is still on the growing economy of China and the increase of jobs there hampering supply here...

It's true that the Japanese rate has gotten fat aginst the dollar. However, Japan still has a reputation of being a very expensive place to be. Meaning even if the exchange rate is good it is harder to save money. I'm sure some would argue that is not true, honestly, I really don't know. But the perception is there.

I think demand is probobly the same. I get the feeling the Hagwon is one of the last cuts Korean's will make. I'm sure some differing opinions on that as well. Overall I think there are less people willing to come as result of exchange and compitition from China. Look out if they every let the currency go in China everyone will move.

Not sure about the supply but pretty sure the demand in SK is going up due to provinces wanting to hire more teachers.

Don't know, but forecasts have it at 1400 until late 2009, so I'd say 3.0M. You'll never get it, but at least you'll know why Korea seems surprised when it has crap teachers.

Ask for whatever you feel you are worth, but you'll get the same as before the exchange rate changes. You aren't in corporate north america where you could reasonably expect to negotiate a contract based upon your skill set.

....and don't expect to be paid the same as your experienced Korean counterpart.

What i don't understand is if the demand for teachers are going up why are the salaries, terms and contracts getting shittier? I barely see jobs hit the 2.5 mark and those are way out in the country. Most are like 2.0 - 2.3

When teachers stop taking these jobs, the salaries will go up. Unless there's some other economic variable going on here that's going right over my head.
