Last week at Costco (Yongdungpo) there was a big display of paintings for sale including many abstracts. I liked a couple, but didn't have the cash at the moment. I went back to the store today, and the whole display had been replaced by Santas and Space heaters. Just, on the off chance, if anyone has been to the other Costcos, do they still have the big abstract painting sale?
In most Korean art stores there are 3 items:
- Chinese mountains (I got one)
- Flowers (I try to avoid on principal)
- 1 year old children (I don't have one)
I also saw some famous painting reprints in the Subway station one time.

But this sale at Costco was the first time I ever saw abstracts. They were about 50k to 200k for reprints and way up in the millions for originals. If anyone might maybe know where these guys moved on to, or anywhere else that might have paintings not of mountains, flowers, or children, please let me know and I'll appreciate it.

I don't know about your situation, but I may be able to help in general. There is an underground market connected to Express Bus Terminal. Go in the direction of "Underground Flower Market" when you see the signs. Not only are there beautiful flowers, but there are shops with clothes, kitchen supplies, art, etc. I was there this weekend with a friend and she was atcually shopping for paintings. I saw lots of abstract art there.

I went to the Underground Flower market at Gangnam Express bus terminal. It was great; thanks so much. I would say it is the best place in Seoul for paintings that are not Chinese style (although I also have one of those too). A lot of the stuff looks rather mass produced, but the prices are good and fits the temporary needs of most foreigners in Seoul.

You could contact Costco Korea directly and ask them what happened to the display.

Not to far from that display were a bunch of ATMs. Sorry you missed them.

Anyway, Costco Korea is pretty good at replying. They replied to my request about cat food. The Yongdongpo-gu Costco doesn't carry cat food anymore, but the others do.

I've seen artwork at art shows in Korea. Sometimes the works are for sell and other times they aren't. Many cities have such shows but you will have to ask a local Korean to find their locations.
