I will be out of Korea for every possible day during my winter vacation, so as to stay out of the cold and refresh my mind/attitude outside of "Korean culture" (which is like Martian culture)
I was considering Cebu... but I refuse to pay 50 dollars plus a night for some hotel room. I'm also interested in something bettter than an 8 dollar a night hostel for backpackers.
A serviced appt kind of thing? or just an appt? nothing fancy, but clean?
anyone know of where I can find/look for such a thing? |

You can get a pension house for about $300 per month (monthly rate) with private washroom, shower (warm water - not hot) fridge, TV and housekeeping.
ACE Pensionne, comes to mind (from personal experience). Travel agent next door (also good), Gaisano mall across the street, KFC, McDs, Lechon Manok are all right there and all the local cuisine you could ask for within a 5 minute walk. Tel. +(6332) 3411140 {locally 032-341-1140}
p100-120 by cab to SM or Ayala mall and 10 minutes to Marina mall and the p50 to the airport.
Next door is the Mactan pension house as well. There are others but these are OK for landing and you can scope out something different if they don't suit you.
Slightly upscale is the Inn : HOTEL CESARIO
Address : MANUEL L QUEZON, PUSOK,
LAPULAPU CITY
Tel. No. : (032)340-0211 (from Korea: 00700-6332-340-0211
Daily rates from p1600 and monthly rates are negotiable.
Rate includes: free airport pickup, pool and daily breakfast. It is another good place to park for a day or two while you find cheaper digs. 5 minutes from the airport and located between the two bridges going into Cebu city.

thanks tompattz!
the pension house sounds great!!!
only 2 other things:
is there a pool anywhere nearby I can use - or beach for that matter (though I like pools)
and a good gym?
everything else I can take care by myself. Should I call these people or is there a better way to contact them?
one last question - how far removed are these places from the nightlife/happening spots in Cebu?
I don't necessarily want to be in the middle of it all, but I also don't want to be in the proverbial "sticks", if you know what I mean. |

AVOID Lapu-Lapu or ANYTHING on Mactan Island. It's sticks-ville and far from Cebu City! It might be okay for a night, and while the hotel might be alright, you are far from the best that Cebu has to offer if you want to go out at night for the happening spots of Cebu. The little Giasana Mall across from this location is also sticks-ville, and depressingly so.
------
You will want to focus on UPTOWN CEBU and/or LAHUG.
One place, listed in the Lonely Planet, that has MONTHLY rates, is the Apartelle. It is located updown on N. Escario Street. They come with refridgerators and kitchen facilities. It is kind of huge and empty feel however, in the rooms and in the halls. But decent price and such. You'll have to take taxis a lot from there, but only $1 (and maybe 10-15 minutes) to all the better places in Cebu from that location. It isn't in the thick of it, but it would have the kitchenette and reasonable price with monthly rates.
I'm sure there are better options, but it is the only one I personally know that offers monthly rates with the kitchenette and such.
--------
Everytime I go to Cebu, I always stay at PENSIONNE LA FLORENTINA. It is near 'Golden Peak', a somewhat famous hotel NEAR AYALA MALL. 'La Florentina' isn't the most desireable place, but the prices are quite reasonable, and I find that I will walk to Ayala Mall during the daytime and just 'hangout'. There are tons of international restaurants, shopping, bars, coffee shops, internet cafes, movie theaters, etc. inside Ayala Mall. Then at night, you can taxi it over to where ever else you want to go in the evening. Fortunately this location is between uptown Cebu and Luhag, so you have A LOT of options. (I don't know if you'd want to stay there longterm though at that hotel, might it might be a good start). KUKU'S NEST is a real low-down budget old-man drinking beer all day in the garden hotel real close to La Florentina. Quite a few longtermers stay there, and I certainly wouldn't recommend staying at Kuku's Nest, but a little networking and finding info might be good there.
If you stay in that corner (where La Florentina, Kukus Nest, and Golden Peak are at), there is a Cuban/Spanish bar called WINESHOP that has some real good solid food - a must after spending time in Korea for awhile.
But the place YOU MUST VISIT in CEBU is BADGER's BAR. It is across from Country Mall. It's an expat-owned bar, about 4 guys, and everytime I go there, they FILL me with information on Cebu and everything you can possibly want to know and more. Maybe stay at somewhere like La Florentina, then do first-hand research on the ground with the Badger's Bar Owners.
Once you are ready for nightclubs, SUNFLOWER DISCO will be the place for you. An interesting place to start. It use to be THE place, maybe still is, probably.
Also, http://youtube.com/watch?v=wbB5CswtwHA&mode=related&search= is essential to view all 7 episodes before entering the Philippines Wild On 'E's take on the Philippines, including Manila, Cebu, and Boracay for partying, typical of 'wild on e'
Anyways, I'd recommend exploring on the ground before you commit to anywhere. If you do want to commit beforehand on the phone before you check things out first-hand, APARTELLE would be one to consider. Not much right there for walking distance things to do, but they do have low rates at monthly rates anyways, and taxi is close-proximity to everything.
Personally, I think you should hit Badgers Bar and see what those guys have to say, as they are in contact with so many people on a nightly basis anyways. |

Elegant Circle Hotel on the park circle in midtown Cebu. Walk to everything! McDonalds downstairs to boot! About $20 per night (discount for one month stay).
You won't regret it! |
