Hey all,

Does anybody have any good ideas activities to teach "May I?" or "Can I?" to elementary children that's fun and doesn't require a lot of printouts?

Thanks everybody!

May I = asking permission (May I go to the washroom?) Answer: Yes, you may.

Can I = able to (Am I able to go to the washroom? Answer: I don't know.. are you able to? only you know that!)

Yes, I know the difference between the two, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for activities that would get them using "permission" words.

I don't know of any activities, but I just did this last week. The one thing that got everyone's attention was when I explained that "May I" is considered more polite and respectful -- yes! English has a polite way of speaking as well. It's just more subtle.... the idea of that caught their interest.

Also be sure to cover your bases with how "may" is used with "you" as well. Some kids just hear "can" and "may" and then you end up with, "May you come to my house for lunch?" When they have no intentions of asking about their friends' parents' opinion on the subject.

Have them all line up on the wall at one end of the classroom. Teach them things like 'big jump', 'one-foot hop', 'small step', etc...
Then one by one give them an order. Like, 'Bum-suck, take 5 baby steps'. Bum-suck has to say '____ teacher, May I?'. You say 'Yes you may'. And the kid has to remember what you said and take the steps/jumps/whatever. Move on to the next kid and so on. First kid to touch the opposite wall wins. If the kid forgets to say 'teacher, May I?' he has to go back to the start.

That 's all I got.

I make my HS girls say this. One of the girls kind of got confused. She said "Teacher, may I help you...go to the bathroom?" Laughing

Made my day!
