Hi folks,
Don't mean to exclude all the American and British friends here, I just need solid advice about Canadian dollars vs Korean won.
My Visa has been approved but yet I'm doubting myself whether or not I should go back to Korea since the Won is so weak. How are you all Canadians dealing with this? I'm seriously considering your advice. Should I go, stay, or postpone? BTW, if I postpone until Feb 09, is my Visa still good then? Isn't it valid for 3 months?

Your visa may be good for 90 days but your employer may not be. IF you don't get on the plane soon you may not have a job.
Your visa is NOT transferable to another employer/sponsor so if you don't come now you will have to wait until it is expired (without being used) before you can even begin applying for another job.
In regards to whether / when the won will go up again.... your guess is as good as anyone's. Personally, I think it will rise again to ~1250 but the when is anyone's guess. That would depend more on global events than anything domestically.
Stay or go.... do you have a job at home now? Will you have a job at home next spring? Do you have debts that you HAVE TO send money home to cover and pay or can you hold your savings here until the exchange rate improves?
At least ESL is still a growth industry in Asia (not just Korea) so you can be assured of a job and housing.

I am a little behind you in the VISA process to go back to Korea again. I figure considering the paid appartment, bonus, national pension (which for Canadians is equivalent to getting a 2nd bonus) and overtime and privates you can still do well. Better than remaining home with no job....unless of course you have a better job lined up in Canada.
I felt the same reservations as you with the falling won and the new strict E2 process. But remember, our dollar is also down so that helps offset the weaker won!
Unless you find something better, I'd go for it! |
