Should one be cautious in taking a job with SMOE at this time of year? When a position has come open because the previous teacher jumped ship should I be worried that I will want to jump as well?

thanks

Are you in a rare case where you know the school you would work at and be hired at a strange time of the year simply to fill the empty space?

Otherwise, SMOE is a crapshoot on where you get placed.

As of right now, no I don't know where I will be placed, but I may be able to find out in a few days. IDK.

If you can, request to be put in a guest house for the first month and try to find your own housing. Even if they say no, you've started off with a request and a record of it in case you don't like your housing and want to get moved.

Maybe. Maybe they won't give a sh!t.

Some Native Teachers here aren't worthy of much. The previous Teacher may have left simply because he/she couldn't stand it/take it any more. That doesn't mean you couldn't. What kind of spine do you have? Go for it, but don't blame me if the school S***S. I think I work at a pretty good place but I could complain about this/that, but you'd get that at any school.

You should take the position but only if you will get the privileges of a full year contract. For instance if you start now and your contract ends in August that will be 9 months of work but you can get 21 days vacation time, a round trip ticket and 300,000 settlement fee. If they try to give you less, forget about it.

I filled a position for a runner and will be signing my third contract with SMOE as will a close friend of mine.

I think they do give the full benefits, the same standard contract everyone else gets. Except, I was under the assumption that most get paid back for airfare, in this case it is pre-paid

I read this more as "some native teachers got tired of being treated like a less-than-human, unqualified idiot while they had more education and EFL ability than the rest of the school staff. They decided the day-to-day efforts to improve the program and then being met with hostility, jealousy and contempt are simply not worth it, especially with the state of the Korean economy."

They only give a 500,000 Won allowance for housing, is that enough to find a decent place? Is this much better than the provided?

Ask for a homestay, so if there is any problem or if you find a better place, you could leave without them taking 500,000 out of your paycheck and you are not stuck there.

I wish I figured that out at the beginning. I wish someone had asked this question before I signed a contract with SMOE and kjelly80 would have answered it.

My place was a prison, not enough place for everything they had to provide as listed in contract and there was no window. Too many problems with the place.
